It's good to support people you believe in ... athletes, politicians, serial killers ...

Wait. Did I just say serial killers?

A charismatic ex-convict who likes to taunt prosecutors and has gained a small but avid following goes on trial this week, nearly three years since a tip led police to a gruesome discovery -- the remains of at least five people buried in his backyard.

Hugo Selenski's murder trial has been eagerly anticipated in northeastern Pennsylvania, where the one-time bank robber has become something of a celebrity.

[...]

Other human remains found in the yard have yet to be identified. Officials have not been able to determine how many sets of remains there are but have said there are at least five and as many as 12, counting the four identified victims.

Selenski staged a daring jailbreak in late 2003, opening a window at the Luzerne County jail and using a rope made of bed sheets to climb down seven stories.

He turned himself in three days later. His alleged partner, who was severely injured, has claimed that Selenski beat him nearly unconscious and then pushed him out the window.

Some people really need to find better things to do than rally for the cause of murderous fucking idiots like this, no matter how charismatic or charming they may be.

I thought only cartoons used ropes made of bedsheets for their daring escapes.

I find the source article a bit disturbing. The US justice system seems a bit scary.

EDIT: He needs to start selling tee-shirts with his face on them to help with his legal costs.

This isn't really anything new. Charles Manson had/has similar followers. Those people whom Badlands and Natural Born Killers was based on (the names escape me at the moment) did too. It's bizarre.

This is about as stupid as considering letting the founderof the Crypts live.

Well, at least we know that our tax dollars are going for a good cause. Like keeping criminals in...... Wait, did that say a rope made out of bed sheets? Good lord, this is ridiculous....

It's certainly not the first time a murderous fucktard has scored themselves adoraring fans.

Richard Ramirez: great bone structure, nice head of hair, cheeky smile, legion of female fans. Killed at least 13 people.

I think we should have a special law that when someone kills a bunch of people and burys thier remains in thier yard that we just get to kill them quickly in an efficent and inexpencive manner and be done with it.

In fact, maybe if we extended it to all cases of multiple homicide where you have clear physical evidence? Or maybe all cases of violent crime where you have clear physical evidence.

It bugs me that we don't have the resources for adequet health care for the elderly, or schools for poor kids, but we can waste time and money on these useless fucks.

But then OJ wouldn't be alive today, tracking down the real killers.

I could care less about serial killers (as long as they aren't hiding in my closet with a skinning knife) but I'm really curious about serial killer groupies. I wonder what goes on in the head of someone like that.

Or all cases of violent crime where you have pretty good, looks-OK-to-me, he-must-have-done-it physical evidence.

Ding ding. The psychosis that serial killers have is something that we need to understand so we can better treat/capture future serial killers.

I wont get into the death penalty aspect except for saying, we dont need provisions so we can kill people even faster.

agreed.

though I am far more vocal about opposing the death penalty (I am Christian, and think it is wrong to institutionalize killing people - I feel like we're trying to play God when we decide whether another person should live or die), I truly think we need to be studying serial killers so we can hopefully prevent people from getting to that point. If we knew the signs, and could stop someone from becoming a serial killer, it would be worth keeping all those guys alive.

I agree, but the process that changes people to "find something better to do" is complicated. It's also easy to say, as many do, "I'm against that guy, lock him up, throw away the key."

Whether you are for the triumph of the Law and Order types or for the serial killer, it is part of the same discourse. Rebel/Savior, Criminal/Prosecutor. Sorry to be tangential, but this is in my mind connected to the ideology of rock and roll as rebellious salvation. Warhol understood this well.

Those who rally round the criminal as celebrity are for the most part, prepping for full incorporation into the society of the spectacle.

I'm actually going to school for that, it's a part of Forensic Psychology. I get to look at case studies from serial killers and try to figure them out and create profiles. biggrin
Anyway, it is rather odd that these types of people have groupies, but what disturbs me is the extent to what these groupies will go to, to get the attention of the killer. They believe in a distorted sense of reality in that, these women think that they can save them men that have been wronged in their past lives. You know the defense "Oh well I killed 60 people because my mom ran out on me and my dad abused me as a child" A woman's caring nature wants to fix this problem... crazy stuff I'm telling you.

Ted Bundy had groupies too. This is a man who did really, really horrible things to exactly the same sort of women who fell for him. *boggles*
