Not just Grandpa, he also ran for mayor here a couple times (once trying--unsuccessfully--to have his name read "grandpa" al lewis on the ballot), he owned a restaurant in the west village, and was very good basketball scout.

He was 95 years old. He probably would tell you that he had a pretty interesting life. He saw it all -- vaudeville and silent movies to DVD and ipod. Bi-planes to the space station. And he could really rock the cowl, too.

Grandpa Munster story:

His restaurant was in the west village. Herman Munster lived in my building on broadway. The two would never talk. Yet, I would see both of them everyday. Herman Munster walking his shnauser, Grandpa Munster learing at college girls.

So finally I ask Grandpa Munster if Fred Gwynn ever stops by. He says, with a cigar in his mouth "Fuck that Fruitcake."

Great story. If I remember correctly, he ran as a Green Party candidate for governor, & opposed the Rockefeller drug laws (which do suck).

But I'll always remember him from TV - including Car 54 Where Are You? He seemed like quite a neat guy. Bless you, Grandpa Munster.

I always regret not going to Grandpa's restaurant when it was open. Meeting stars of today often fills me with indifference, but meeting Al Lewis would have been great.

frown That's sad. Even in his old age he made really cool appearances on radio shows and whatnot - a great entertainer 'til the end. He'll be missed.

He ran for governor the time he sued to have his name be "Grandpa" on the ballot. I voted for him.
