This shocking picture shows the moment three drunken thugs launched a "brutal and sustained" attack in Bristol city centre.

Captured on CCTV cameras set up to monitor the Centre, the men attacked Raymond Beattie in St Augustine's Parade after he told them off for dropping litter.

Yesterday the trio were each jailed for a year at Bristol Crown Court.

The court was told Danny Rich, Craig Martin and Ricky Vockings knocked Mr Beattie to the ground and stamped on him as he lay prone.

Rich, aged 20, of Lynton Road, Bedminster, Martin, 18, of Bishport Close, Withywood and Vockings, 20, of Newland Road, Withywood, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Sentencing each to one year in a young offenders' institution, the Recorder Mr Brian Lett told them: "It was a brutal and sustained attack. It was gravely dangerous to his health and future.

"Once you had knocked down the 45-year-old street drinker, you stamped on his body and head and kicked his prone body after he ceased to move.

"You well know how dangerous stamping on a prone person is."

Ian White, prosecuting, said the attack took place in daylight at 6.30pm on October 8 last year, when the three men suddenly turned on Mr Beattie.

A police investigation and prosecution followed even though Mr Beattie did not want to help with it, the court heard.

The court heard that Mr Beattie had been stamped on and kicked and had been fortunate to avoid serious injuries.

John Stokes, defending Rich, said his client accepted there was no excuse for his behaviour that evening.

He said: "The only explanation could be the over consumption of intoxicants that afternoon."

Mr Stokes said his client had not been before the court in the past and what happened amounted to a drunken escapade about which Rich expressed remorse.

James Wilson-Smith, defending Martin said his client had also not been before the court or had any dealings with police before.

He said: "He is deeply ashamed of his actions that night. He made full admissions in interview and his remorse was obvious."

Mr Wilson-Smith said his client's recollection of what happened was limited due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed.

He said: "He thinks there were remarks passed about the dropping of food.

"There must be some explanation as to why it started. Mr Martin says there was an exchange of some sort, but he doesn't suggest Mr Beattie was in any way to blame.

"He has obvious shame for this behaviour, this has very much been a wake up call. At the time he was a binge drinker and it's in drink this offence was committed."

He added that his client had changed his lifestyle since the offence and now drank very little.

Martin Lanchester, defending Vockings, told the court his client accepted his culpability and had showed obvious remorse.

He said Vockings, who left school with nine GCSEs and had work assembling caravans, had exhibited no swagger or bravado about what happened and represented a low risk of reoffending.

I would quite happily pull the trigger on cunts like that.

Just what I was about to say. Not everyone in Bristol is intent on kicking the shit out of anyone they can get their hands on but I have seen it happen a hell of a lot.

I live and have lived in Bristol my entire life.

It's not a Bristol thing, it happens in city centres all over the country.

I cycled into Bristol in 2001. We came in on a route that was heavily industrial and we were pretty intimidated. We thought that coming to Bristol had been a big mistake. We camped downtown(ish) and explored. We found a great city center and had an awesome time. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer.

It's a cool city and you can have a good time here, so many different bars, clubs and pubs to go to. Obviously there are some twats about but you can easily avoid them by going to the rock clubs.
What I generally do is go to 'normal' places to start and then after about 9pm I just go to the rock bars and clubs because in those places it's much more unlikely that you'll get any trouble.
If you look for trouble you will find it. I'm 25 and I've never got into a fight in the town centre. I think alot of it depends on how you react to situations.
