Reagan, rampant homelessness, the height of the cold war, the movie The Day After, yuppies, the complete takeover of the country by the corporate state, Just Say No, the Chicago Bears putting out a record. Shoulder pads in women's wear, tapered jeans, neon clothes, Madonna-wannabies, Duran Duran.

Lots to not miss.

That said, I had a pretty good suburban adolescence in SoCal.

But there is no need to wax nostalgic about something that you were not old enough to understand. That's like me missing the anti-war demonstrations of the late 60's. Yes, i was alive during them, but I was 3. I don't miss them.

No, it's more like you missing the music, the wacky fashion and the Sonny and Cher Show.

80's good:
Dial a joke and other phone nets
mod and punk
video arcades
letter writing
mix tapes

bad 80's:
pre-emo sensitive man
cracked out bangers
corporate metal bands

Every decade has its downsides.

And every decade has its gold.

Even though I was just a wee tike in the 1980's, I still have things about that decade that I miss and cherish...

  • The Goonies - If you were born in the 80's you pretty much got a free copy of this movie. It came standard.

  • Game one of the 88 World Series - This was one of the earliest games I remember going to. I remember seeing Kirk Gibson slam the ball over the right feild fence in the ninth, I remember the pump. I miss moments like that. That's when baseball still ment something to us. Before just about every player looked like a total douche that was only in it for the money.
By the way - FUCK THE YANKEES. There I said it.

  • MTV actually played music!

  • Reality TV had a totally different and less irratating meaning

  • The cartoons fucking rocked

  • Sam Kinison - The greatest comedian - aside from Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor - that had ever lived. AUUUUGH AUUUUGH!!!

  • Punk rock was still about anarchy and non-conformity instead of poppy whiny little bitch lyrics sung by pretty boys who wear eyeliner who think they're so hardcore cause they have a lip peircing but wind up dating Hillary Duff...

...amongst other things.

One might say...

When did reality become T.V.?
What ever happened to sit coms, game shows,

On the radio were
Springsteen, Madonna
way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV

Apparently, Girthman is still preoccupied with nineteen, nineteen, nineteen eighty five.

wink

Dude. When my little sister was born, I broke out the goddamn VHS to watch with her. blush

She was into it until about when she turned 5, then she said it was too lame for her. I was offended... and YET... it was admittedly a lot weirder and less awesome than I'd remembered. (Plus, the girl who played Lady during the live action bits looked startlingly porn star-esque.)
