British researchers have discovered a spontaneous decision to quit smoking is more likely to succeed than a premeditated one.

West and his colleague Taj Sohal questioned 1,900 current and ex-smokers in England about their efforts to kick the habit. They discovered that nearly half of all attempts to quit were spontaneous.

Smokers who decided and stopped immediately were also 50 to 60 percent more likely to succeed.

So what are you waiting for? If you're planning on quitting, put the cigarette down.

This actually rings pretty true. My boyfriend was a smoker for about ten years and had tried to quit before but failed miserably. He decided to quit one day about 8 months ago without any premeditation at all and hasn't smoked since. I think maybe the more thought you put into it the more likely you are to psych yourself out, or something like that...

Whitepuma is correct that you either have to really & truly want to quit smoking, or else you won't. I smoked for several years, and was thinking about or 'trying' to quit for much of that time. One day, while smoking in the back of a Greyhound bus (which used to be legal, believe it or not), it just hit me, and I KNEW that I wanted to quit. It was quite different from the other attempts, which were motivated more out of a sense of feeling that I ought to quit. But when I truly knew it, I was able to. That cigarette on the Greyhound bus was my last, and that was (shudder) almost 20 years ago.

P.S. The fact that Keith Richards is smoking in my profile picture does not mean that I smoke, or that I am Keith Richards. In case you were wondering...
