Hazing rituals are usually a bit of harmless fun that people go through as a rite of passage. Sometimes they go a bit too far, like this case of a Russian soldier.

At least six Russian soldiers have been held after the beating of a conscript, whose injuries were so severe his legs and genitals were amputated.

The incident took place at the Chelyabinsk Tank Academy in the Ural Mountains over the New Year.

Eight other conscripts were also seriously injured.

Investigators say more senior soldiers carried out the beatings, with the co-operation of commanding officers.

Holy fuck, what a bunch of cunts. The Russian army has had a history of "horrific bullying".

Tens of thousands of soldiers run away, while thousands more are left physically and or mentally scarred, the organisation says in its reports entitled The Wrongs of Passage.

The ritual of organised bullying is known as "dedovshchina" - a self-perpetuating system, with two draft periods a year where conscripts enlist for two years.

Add the fact these Russian soldiers are conscripts, and that they don't get any real pay and the whole thing is fucked up.

Not tremendously surprising.

The Red Army's been through some rough times. Twenty million dead in WWII. Being sent to the front lines unarmed and then summarily shot to death by their own officers if they returned.

Dudes are *hard*.

They also apprently don't forget that kind of stuff so easily. wink

Brutality begats brutality, ya know.

Does Hallmark make a "Sorry I ruined your legs and genitals" card? Cause that would smooth over any tension.

These conscripts must be pretty old! Hazing at 80?

I don't think the Russian army is the only one to have this kind of trouble. US, and UK have all had horror stories in the press, and the army seems able to ignore compelling evidence. We (the UK) had a case of a young soldiers death being classed as suicide even though he was shot twice in the head. The army trains people to kill, and as in society some of those people will be disfunctional. It happens, it is incredibly sad, but it reflects on society in general, not just the military, trying to ignore it is the worst thing to do.

Hazing is bad. Hazing is always bad. Any 'Good' that comes from hazing occurs in spite of the hazing, rather than because of it.

Moral of the story? Beating the shit out of the guy who might some day have to decide if he wants to risk his life to pull your wounded ass off a battlefield is a dumbshit thing to do.
