I'm a bright young man looking for advice.

It hit me the other day that I have almost enough units to transfer from my community college to a real university but I have no idea where to go. I don't think that the counselors at my school are very on the ball in regards to my situation so I turn to you strangers for advice!

I want to write. I want to be a comedy writer. I want to write for TV and maybe film. I want to earn a living doing these things. My ultimate fantasy goal is to write for Saturday Night Live.

Where should I go? Whom should I see? What should I do? Which ancient bearded wizard do I need to fellate in order to succeed?

Strangers! Please advise me.

If you're also interested in doing comic acting, I could offer no better place to start than Second City.

Yeah, go to Yale if you want to everything really well, only in a way completely incompatible with the way the rest of the world operates, but you have to insist that they do it your way because, after all, you did go to Yale and they didn't.

At least, that's how the drama school works.

Matt Groening said he only hires writers from Harvard. SNL veteran Al Franken is a Harvard grad as is connon obrian who wrote for SNL and Simpsons.

it might be relatively difficult to find a university that offers a specific comedy writing program. i'd try and figure out the area you want to go to, and look at schools around their. look at their english and writing programs, and their theatre/film programs as well.

If you're good enough, go to Harvard and write for the Lampoon. That's where the majority of Simpsons, SNL, and Conan O'Brien's writers come from.

Do you have any idea what a bad idea that sounds like?

Yeah, but if I wanted to be a crash test dummy, you'd still think it sounded like a bad idea, wouldn't you? WOULDN'T YOU?!

The Simpsons was one of the best-written shows of all time.

Ugh. The Lampoon hasn't been funny since Conan O'Brien left in '85.

It wasn't funny even then. You're missing the point.

The writers who work on the jobs that he wants are mostly from the Lampoon.

Also--You were two years old in 1985. I'm sure that your sense of humor has changed since then.

True enough. But I don't know if I've met anyone who finds the current Lampoon issues funny. Occasionally, they'll have a decent once-off (like the H Bomb mock-up two years ago), but the regular issues seem devoid of humor of any sort.

I'm more of a Demon sort of girl, I guess.

If you wanna stay (somewhat) local, San Diego State has an excellent TV/Film program. So does USC, but that's gonna cost you.
