More of a anthropological question, what do you feel that in our modern soceity today , makes a man; a man?

Money?
Career position?
Fame - Infamy?
Personaility?

Is a person with money and power , but completly deviod of any moral compass, a man? How about a poor fast food joint worker, with a heart of gold? Is he considered a man? How important is it for a soceity to have men? Can a person who has never had a "father" figure to emulate capable of being a man? How does this effect the women of the soceity who find it fustrating that they cannot find "men"? Is their view on what a "man" is confused now with the ever -changing economic and cultural world?

In that case, is the famliy forever doomed to a purgatory of confusion and apphrehension on what is what? Can young males ever hope to achieve a physcological basis of stability in who they are? Is the age of men over? Are we forever set to live in a world where there are no "men" but just males running around with no rules to live?

The Big Lebowski: Is it being prepared to do the right thing, whatever the cost? Isn't that what makes a man?
The Dude: Sure, that and a pair of testicles.

It's all about how many roads he's walked down. Whoever has walked the most roads is the manliest.

Well, that and a gigantic penis.

Men (and women fwiw) are essentially selfish in nature.
Even people living selfless lives are being emotionally fulfilled by helping others- but all mostivation is essentially self interested.

I am lucky to know many men who are living good, healthy, vibrant lives.

It IS a pity that the people who run the world tend to be a less than ethical in their behaviour, however.

My single women friends who complain about there being 'no suitable men' in the world often have impossible criteria that have to be met in order for a man to be deemed 'suitable'.

I only have one testicle... does that make me less of a man?

I don't think I fully understand the original question.

If you feel like you're a man, then you probably are one. I don't personally tie things like wealth, status, nobility, courage, compassion, or morality to masculinity since girls can get those things too.

Honestly, I hope it's not vocation, or virility, or power that constitute "it." I'm not particularly fond of the term "man" as anything other than a gender classification. But it's the term we're stuck with.

I guess I would consider a "man" someone with scruples (whatever they may be) who tries hard (esoteric, I know), is caring, adn is accountable. Maybe that trite and simple; I don't know.

Yeah, I think the same things that make a man a "man" also make a woman a "woman."

Well, I know I am referred to as one. I have fought for my country; then gone AWOL. I have walked grandmothers across the street; then disappeared from the face of the earth. I have worked (statistically) the most dangerous job on the planet, crab fishing in the Bering Sea; and then left it amongst models and coke in Miami. And I can honestly say I've never lost a fight. But that's just my humble take on things....

Yeah, I think the same things that make a man a "man" also make a woman a "woman."

So we're not talking about masculinity and femininity, but rather maturity?
