I can't believe you're all stupid enough to be watching this vapid, vacuous program.

What's the interest? To watch what all your friends are watching? Does anyone on it even cover DECENT music?

One point that hasn't been mentioned.
This is a singing show. The vast majority of those who get ridiculed, get it because they can't actually sing.
The level of self-delusion amongst some of these people is stunning, and I'm sorry, if you go on a singing show, and you can't sing, you're asking for it.
If either the androgynous guy, or the guy who was told to be a drag queen (Cowell's suggested that to more than a few people on X-Factor, the UK variant) could actually sing, they wouldn't have got teased, simple as that.
Brian Molko & Boy George were both subjects of gender confusion when they first appeared, doesn't mean evryone was being homophobic, just confused...

Hey Timer, I'll tell you what the appeal is. This is what we in the UK call Car-Crash television. It's TV that's so appalling, it's difficult to turn away. You cringe at all of the unbelievable self-delusion, you laugh as the person who was sooo convinced that they were an incredible singer that they argue with the judges, claiming that they know more about the industry. And then you get just a touch of the goosebumps, as someone with genuine talent pops up.
And hell, I don't want these bozo's trying to sing decent tunes (although you do get 'em - there was an incredible woman on the X-Factor who had an unbelievable Death metal grunt).
Basically, you don't take it seriously. Life's too short.

As annoyed as you might have been, I have absolutely no doubt that there were many people who were offended by that segment (which I saw as it was happening). Even I found it offensive. They were completely exploiting that contestant for shock value and comedy. And don't let me hear anyone say that he was "asking for it" because he dressed and acted in a feminine way. That's his choice.

I wonder how many of us would think, "well I wish the Civil rights movement had shut it's big mouth for a while back i nthe 60s and 70s"? It's up to groups like GLAAD to open up public dialogue about these incidents, which is just what they are proposing to do in this case.
This is especially called for when the negative portrayal of this contestant (Zachary, if I recall) is shown to millions of mainstream television viewers in a manner that makes it seem acceptable.

Oh for fuck's sake. Comparing this bullshit to the civil rights movement is an insult to the civil rights movement. This isn't the government preventing blacks or anyone else from getting a fair education. This isn't about fair voting rights. This is about a couple of private citizens on a TV show making fun of a guy. Get a fucking sense of perspective.

So some people were offended. That whole show is offensive to me. I think it's one of the most retarded piece of crap shows on television these days. Shows like American Idol are why I don't even have cable anymore. But so what? TV is allowed to be offensive. Where the fuck does it say no one's allowed to be offended anymore? Maybe if Simon's remarks meant that suddenly guys who look or act like chicks couldn't vote, I'd be worried. Thankfully, they don't. They're just the remarks of one famous guy who thought a dude-looks-like-a-lady was funny.

Carlos can be irritating but when he said that these days it's "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will devestate my inner child forever" he was fucking right.

Well as highly as I hold the opinion of someone who resorts to dismissing someone's ideas as "stupidity," it is, in fact, and similar situation. Just because you believe that blacks deserve more public advocacy than do gays, bisexuals, lesbians, or the transgendered, doesn't mean that it isn't an important issue.

And just because it happens on American Idol, doesn't mean it's trivial. In fact, that it reaches such a wide audience is what makes it so important. To make the same (and yes, fair) comparison: would you have dismissed Al Jolsen's blackface as just a joke if you were the one being mocked and belittled by it?

How are they anywhere NEAR similar? In one case you had people who had been slaves, who couldn't vote and who couldn't get a fair education (among other things). In this case you have some dweeb who goes on American Idol and gets made fun of. So the hell what? If I laugh at a dude for dressing up like a chick, does my laughter prevent him from going to school? Does it mean he suddenly can't vote? Does it mean that tomorrow he has to go out and mow my lawn or some shit? NO. It means he got laughed at. His poor little feelings were hurt. Tough. The whole show is about making fun of people. If you don't like it, don't watch it. That's the best way to tell FOX that you don't like it.

Every time GLAAD bitches about some whiner who got his feelings hurt, they lose credibility for when something really important happens. For example, when a bunch of fuckers grab a dude, beat the shit out of him, and leave him tied to something out in the boonies, just because he's gay. That's when GLAAD needs to come out screaming like a banshee. Not when some dude got made fun of on TV.

The question is, would you WANT them to cover decent music. I don't think I'd like songs that mean something to me being glossed over by the show. Some of them were originally sung by guys wearing dresses though, so maybe that'd shut Cowell up...

Im sorry, but the guy they were talking about when Randy asked him if he was a girl, LOOKED like a girl. My friend in Denver worked with him and his band mate thought he was a chick too.

I am pretty sure that anyone of the 35 million people watching the show that night thought the same thing, how the hell couldn't you, I mean the guy looked like and acted like a girl.

Did you see the guy they were talking about? He was wearing a girl-cut shirt and girl jeans, high heeled boots, his voice was indistinguishable from a girl's, he had a girl's haircut, and had the body and facial structure of a waifish girl. And yet he was all like "I just laugh when people ask if I'm a girl, I don't understand it" surreal

The video evidence.

after watching the video clip, i don't see what the big fuss is about.

glaad is making noise about this just because it's a chance to get a lot of publicity for their cause. they know american idol has big ratings and they are really reaching for it on this non-issue.
