The more negative things there are about smoking to ignore, the cooler smoking seems to get.

They are paid for directly by "big tobacco," as a requirement of settelements, and a way to avoid future liability.

I'd much rather have the commercials than banning smoking.
At least it lets people make their own decisions with more information.

I've just never appreciated the feeling I get from those commercials that they feel they're just now revealing the information that smoking is bad for you. Yeah, everyone knows it's bad for you, no need to dump a thousand body bags on the street asshole.

Yeah. Me, too. not out of rebelion, or anything. Just because they usually just remind me that i haven't had a cigarette in a while.

That reminds me. *goes to smoke*

They just don't seem very effective, nor can I see how they ever could be.

People that think smoking is fucking gross (like me), don't need to be preached to.

People that smoke aren't going to change their minds due to some commercial.

I think they should show commercials about smoking ettiquette instead.

You know: Butt out in ashtrays, don't blow your smoke towards other people, stop smoking at the train station, etc. It's surprising how many people neglect such simple things as those. There's nothing more aggravating than being stuck waiting for a train with some twat blowing smoke in my face and dirtying the place up with his garbage.

Sort of like (I think it was) the Cancer Society's commercial about smoking outside if you've got children in the house. Small things that make a big difference to other people.

good call....or not to come over to someone else's table at a bar and "borrow" their ashtray to put out your cig's......BTW, I smoked for 10 years, and quit a year ago, so I get annoyed easily by shit like this...

Bah, if they really want to end smoking they need to use some social engineering. Create situations where kids who might take it up can see that most of their actual peers dissaprove of it, instead of phony actors saying "not cool man" or "not for kids."

For example they could focus more on how it effects peoples looks in the long run (Wrinkles, teeth not as nice, exc) and offer a fair sized award for teenagers to report any store / person / other teen who sells or distributes cigs to teenage smokers. "The man" trying to punish kids for smoking makes it seem cool, teenagers turning in people who sell cigerettes to other teens sends the message that it's not acceptable, or at least not positive, from a social standpoint. Addiction or death dosn't scare a dumb ass, being ugly and having people not like them anymore does.

The truth adverts are very good though, for traditional advertising. Though I think they are more likely to help someone quit than to stop them from taking it up in the first pace.

It just pisses me off that there is a group that has so much funding and they waste their time attacking tabacco.

I mean sure, it's bad that people smoke,

but if this is their idea of activism, or changing the world, I mean fucking come on!

Deal with poverty, or lack of medical care/perscription coverage, or the fucking war, SOMETHING!

I wrote them once about how if they spent their money on education then maybe they could decrease the number of teen smokers in the inner city. They never wrote me back.

I am pretty sure they are also. But what do they care they make all their money over seas.

But atleast the truth commercials are as bad as the anti-marijuana ads.

If you smoke weed your going to shoot your friend in the face.

Hmm a loaded revolver in your top desk draw when you have kids in your house. Isn't that an ad againt guns?
