As we all know, Barbie has been slammed by critics for decades for portraying an unrealistic standard to young girls.

Well, meet Feral Cheryl, a doll released in Australia meant to be an alternative to the Barbie.

This 34 cm vinyl doll runs barefoot, dreadlocks her hair with coloured braids and beads, wears simple rainbow clothes, has piercings and a range of tattoos, and even a bit of natural body hair.

In contrast to the ‘fashion doll’ mentality, Feral Cheryl does not have an extensive wardrobe, or high heels, or swimsuit, or gym gear, or wedding dress or cheerleader outfit. She needs no sports car or hairdressing salon, no disco stage or shopping mall.

Her motto is "Live Simply, Run Wild". Her only accessories: a bag of home grown herbs*, a sense of humour and a social conscience.
Each Feral Cheryl doll is individually crafted with a variety of coloured beads, bindis and a range of tattoos, so there are no two exactly the same.

Sounds a lot like Hippie Barbie, is she vegan too?

Feral Cheryl is modelled on the green extremists, known as ‘ferals’ from Australia.

This is pretty much my point, not that I dislike the idea of a realistic alternative doll for girls, but any "extreme" one way or another would seem a bit much to me.

Reminds me of that company in (I think) California that made "Hooker Barbie" and "Drag Queen Ken".

Good thing she's still skinny with big tits. : P

Hey, how can it be a viable alternative to a kid's toy if it's clearly marketed at adults? Who's gonna buy their kid a toy that advocates drug use?

I just like the fact someone is trying to stick it to Mattel (who are notorious for being Nazis when it comes to their Barbie line)...

Ma belle Michel Foucault! love

Is it wrong that Feral Cheryl no more represents my weltanschauung than Barbie does? I think Jenny really hit the nail on the head. A denim skirt, a hoodie, a pair of grunge boots and it's off to Harajuku!

Sure her proportions are off, but doesn't the extensive array of occupations available to Barbie at least inspire a bit of creativity and perhaps let the kids who play with the dolls imagine themselves in whatever position they hope to one day be in?

In contrast, this doll is only offering one possibility.

Whatever, kids shouldn't be having fun anyway.

What is that, logic? Sorry, COMRADE, but real women have tattoos and smoke pot.

Didn't they decrease her bust and increase her waist line several years ago?

Bah, no girl plays with Barbies as they are, half the fun is mutilating them to fit your own purpose!

Bindis? Am I the only person who finds that culturally insensitive?

I'm all for people finding alternatives for their children, but a doll whose only accessories are drugs and and appropriated symbology is hardly the one I would pick.
