Just a month before the opening of the Winter Olympics, reigning overall World Cup champion skier Bode Miller finds himself in hot water over remarks that aired Sunday night on '60 Minutes'.

Miller told the CBS Sunday night program, which released written excerpts Thursday, that "there have been times when I've been in really tough shape at the top of the course."

"Talk about a hard challenge right there. ... If you ever tried to ski when you're wasted, it's not easy," Miller said. "Try and ski a slalom when ... you hit a gate less than every one second, so it's risky. You're putting your life at risk. ... It's like driving drunk, only there are no rules about it in ski racing."

Asked if the risk meant he would never ski drunk again, the 28-year-old Miller replied, "No, I'm not saying that."

*UPDATE* 01/12/06 3:40pm EST
Bode apologizes.

Bode Miller apologized Thursday for his comments about skiing and drinking during a televised interview, regretting the "confusion and pain" he caused.

...

"To the people who I don't have any direct interaction with: fans, just people, parents who are trying to put all athletes up on a pedestal and show their kids what they're supposed to be like," Miller said. "Obviously, the message that came through was not something that I would promote or (what) I'm about in any aspect of my sporting career."

"I think the people who have watched me through my career can say I don't ... put anything in front of, my sporting career and in front of taking ski racing and sports seriously," he added. "Those are the most important things. And then on top of that I'd like to apologize to the media because I've been not speaking with you guys very much."

did anyone else's notice the mans last name is MILLER? Come on... I'm sure it's just peer pressure... eh... eh?

Feh... It's amusing, albeit I really hope this guy doesn't wipeout and kill himself... or hello new drug tests for everyone.

The new olympic slogan would be ... "You'll train your ass off for four years, just to be watched like a 5 year old for a few days, and you'll LIKE IT"

/shrugs/ or something to that effect.

Sounds kinda fun! I love it when someone just fucks with the whole sports world by breaking all the rules.
The ideology behind most modern, professional sports has a good deal of scary connotations to puritanism and protestant ethics (yes! I´ve read Weber!).
So I like it when some drunk idiot wins, now and then.

May goD strike me down if that´s wrong!

I actually saw this segment and thought it was pretty awesome. He parties all the time, falls more than any other world class skier, and still beats everyone.

I personally don't drink, smoke, or do drugs, but I don't see the problem here. He's not taking anything to enhance his performance; you don't think Babe Ruth and Roger Maris played baseball games shitfaced drunk?

The whole thing reminds me of when that guy who won the gold medal for snowboarding in 1998 tested positive for marijuana.

Like that was supposed to be a surprise?
