Ok, first a bit of background. i work for a chain of supermarkets and convienience stores in the southwest and west midlands of the uk. A couple of months back i was helping out in one of the stores in cheltenham, where one supervisor had pink hair. The manager didn't mind her having pink hair, the customers thought it was great, but our district manager didn't. he made her wear a stupid blonde wig to cover it, which has gotta be ileagle. but, other than going to the union and getting him done on grounds of discrimination is there anything else we could do? Any ideas of what we could do, or examples of this happening to you and what you did would be very welcome.
In the US an employer can make their employees dress in whatever way they feel is appropriate, I think. If they don't like your hair color or the peircings in your face, they can fire you based on nothing else. I think they'll usually ask you to change them, but if you don't...well, yeah. You are, after all, representing their company.
I personally think what they're doing is lame and overly conservative, but some old woman who has been shopping there for thirty years might not.

i can understand peircings (especially after i saw someones eyebrow peircing being torn out!) but i don't see the problem with hair colour, because it's not as if it's a health and saftey issue. but seeing as the girl has been working there for over a year, and there hasn't been a single complaint i can't see the problem.
The laws are different here in the U.S. And the laws very from state to state. California has a long list of laws protecting jobs. Florida has almost none.

Someone from the U.K. should answer this.

I can't stress the important of what PaulNikon has said enough. Someone in the UK needs to answer the question - any other advice you receive is null and void.
On that note - maybe try asking in one of the UK groups?
