In the same way that repeats and DVD sales brought Family Guy back from the dead, Fox are now staring to look at bringing back the much loved yet cancelled Futurama, according to sources including Variety.

The studio is in early discussions to put "Futurama" back in production and create a limited number of episodes of the Emmy Award-winning skein -- although it's too soon to tell where those segs might end up. A rep for 20th Century Fox TV declined comment.

The final original episode of "Futurama" aired on Fox in August 2003. But since then, the skein has found new life -- and fans -- via DVD releases and repeatedly high-rated airings on the Cartoon Network.

"Futurama" remains popular enough that Comedy Central even stole away off-net rights to the show's repeats late last year; it will switch to the laffer cabler in 2008.

Comedy Central has that much faith in it that they paid $400,000 an episode, a record for that network. Futurama managed three Emmy awards during its five season run (pretty confusing as there are only four DVD box sets available), and was the ultimate middle ground between the serious starch science fiction and the humour of The Simpsons. Before the show comes back, the voice stars must return, with Leela (Katey Segal) now starring in 8 Simple Rules, although appearing in Huff hasn't affected Hank Azaria's commitment to The Simpsons. The possibility of return gets HecklerSpray a little too excited.

Imagine for a second, if Fox had never cancelled either show in the first place, but kept them purely because of the quality/cult following of them both. The extra episodes we'd now have may have been a force powerful enough to soothe the tumult clean out of Iraq. How could insurgents roam the countryside if their laughing in their caves. Makes one wonder if any other world healing brilliant comedy has been wrongly put in the stocks down on the Fox lot. If the best predictor of the future is the past, Fox may come to regret any other critically acclaimed cancellations. But this is Futurama's story, so we'll bring up Arrested Development another time. Again.

And, hey if it doesn't come to pass, well, you can bite Bender's shiny metal ass.

What's so confusing about putting two seasons in one box set? That's what they did with Family Guy. tongue

Yah, but Family Guy Volume 1 says "Seasons 1 and 2" The Futurama boxes are labeled, "Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, and Season 4" when there were 5 seasons apparently.

You know, I almost screamed out loud when I saw the title of this thread? Futurama was my favourite show.

Ah, but there weren't five seasons; there were four seasons (hence four boxed sets), with the fourth season spread out over two years at random intervals. Bastards! *chuckle* Still, if they bring back Futurama, all will be forgiven.

They're also supposed to be coming out with a couple Futurama movies. I think they're going to be like an hour long and go straight to dvd.... I wonder if they're still going to do them now that the show may be picked back up.

gotta nerd it up for a second, futurama is very near and dear to my heart...
there were 5 production seasons but those were translated into 4 broadcast seasons, since like you said they were spread out. PLUS they were always being ruined by the end of football games overlapping mad
