Strange name changes always make the news, and about half the time it is to grab attention. Certainly, that's got to be the case in the name change of PETA staffer Chris Garnett to "KentuckyFriedCruelty.com"

Chris Garnett, youth outreach coordinator for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said he changed his name in support of the group’s anti-KFC campaign.

“People don’t believe me at first when I tell them my name, but it never fails to spark a discussion,” Garnett, er, KentuckyFriedCruelty.com, said in a statement. “Many vow to boycott KFC after I explain the company’s indifference to cruelty to animals.”

Norfolk, Va.-based PETA’s complaints against KFC stem from video footage shot last year recording alleged mistreatment of birds at a Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. plant in Moorefield, W.Va. The plant is a KFC supplier.

Despite pressure from PETA, the plant in question was cleared of any wrong doing and their workers were cleared by a grand jury last summer. The cause is supported by a lot of celebrities and customers alike: Pamela Anderson has front a campaign for PETA against KFC. The name, er, website explains the name change of Chris, er, KFC.com.

KentuckyFriedCruelty.com’s advocacy for animals has been the defining force in his life since he was a child. His father would take him fishing, but when he saw the animals struggling at the end of a hook, he insisted on taking up bird-watching instead. He started the first animal rights group at both his high school and college, fought for the right of students to refuse dissection, and pressured cafeteria officials to offer more vegetarian options. Under KentuckyFriedCruelty.com’s watchful eye, peta2’s Street Team has grown to more than 100,000 dedicated young activists across the country who will mobilize in defense of animals at a moment’s notice.

You can even see a picture of his driving license there. It must be handed to him, it is a very effective way of getting people to hear his message. Even if I can't work out which bit would go in the "forename" and "surname" boxes.

So, this is like those "Truth" anti-smoking campaigns, specifically designed to take an issue I might be sympathetic to and make me not care by associating it with retards.

How do you mistreat a bird that's going to end up fried and in my tummy anyway?

Maybe I have too much faith in humanity, but I bet he'll feel like an asshole once he sobers up. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll immediately change it back, but who knows...

From the video (it aired on the news here when it was released) a couple of the employees were video taped kicking the birds, picking bird's up and throwing them against a wall and swing birds by their feet so their head bounced off table tops. They seemed to be enjoying it. Sick Bastards.

I can't believe they got off on cruelty charges. Maybe you can only be cruel to pets or wild animals, not the food supply.

It looks like the only thing he's doing is
hurting the cause. Like most PETA tactics this ends up scaring off just about everybody who isn't already a PETA member. In fact, it helps to reinforce their idea that PETA is largely made up of tools.

I'm against animal cruelty as the next guy, but 99% of the time PETA makes me roll my eyes and walk on. This certainly is a prime example of why.

This is fucking retarded. For one thing, KFC, Popeye's, AND Church's all get their chicken shipped to them from Tyson. As for other chains outside of Texas, I don't know, but my friend (who works at KFC) assures me that all the "cruelty" is taken care of offsite.

See, if they wanted to actually get something done besides make a clever graphic of a recognizable cultural icon brutally murdering a chicken, they could have at least done that much fact-checking. I have nothing against vegetarians of any color or degree, but when I almost have to pull over to the side of the road because my girlfriend wants to throw up all over the dash of my truck for seeing a slaughtered animal on a roadside sign that PETA set up, it kind of draws out those pesky and suspect "I'm a conservative talk-show host" "VegetariantongueETA::Islam:Taliban" analogies.

Militant (insert name of damn near any cause) sucks. I wish we could all just get along in peace.

I used to have a t-shirt that showed "Col. Saunders" holding an axe in one hand and a decapitated bird in the other, spattered with blood. It was not really about any conviction, I just found it amusing. But it is pretty shitty to abuse animals, even those to be used as food. Some might argue to do just that (use for food) is abusive in itself. You will have to figure that one out for yourself. But what those folks in that vid were doing is just wrong.

But it is kind of like the people who work in research labs, (some of them anyway) planting electrodes in monkeys and such. If you can go that far, how much further a stretch is it to become or behave in a really cruel and abrasive/abusive manner? To cross the line, wherever it is drawn. It does happen. You have seen the films, usually only after an ALF raid or something like that.

I could not do that sort of work. We can only hope that those who do will do it in as humane a fashion as possible. Be it research or food production. But it comes as no surprise to me that those folks got off on the cruelty charges. Consider the "rulership" of our country, and remember that shit rolls downhill.

I just came from traffic court. Had my name been Mypoliticaldogma.com I would expect the judge to say something like this: "Alright, Mr. Mypoliticaldogma.com, I'll exercise my judicial discretion and raise your fine from $127.50 to $427.50.

I may be wrong but I believe the idea is that they raise awareness in consumers and try to get them to boycott KFC or wherever, who in response goes to their suppliers and demands better conditions on chicken farms so they can tell everyone it's okay to enjoy the colonel's original recipe again, or somesuch nonsense. I for one would be incredibly amused to see signs proclaiming cruelty-free chicken breast, much like tuna is labeled dolphin safe. bok

Gasp!! You mean they don't actually kill the chickens in the back of the restaurant?? I'm shocked.

I think the point is to force KFC to either buy poultry from less cruel places, or to force Tyson and the other butchers to change some practices.
