it's a pretty simple piece. all text, all in black. the tattoo artist said it would take about an hour.

DON'T bring a friend

DO bring a snack to distract you

DON'T ask the tattoo artist about his own tattoos

DO make sure you know exactly what tattoo you want

Don't be affraid to ask for a break. But for an hour session, you should be fine!

If you're uncertain about anything, just ask.

Definately make sure you have food in your stomach.

What everyone else has said is exactly right.

Oh and just thought I'd let you know what I did when I got my first tattoo - I imagined something far more painful than what was happening, and soon after, I was almost falling asleep! Mind over matter!

Drink lots of water. Do not drink alcohol. Make sure you eat something too. Your endorphins are going to go insane during and after the process, so you'll need the nutrition.

I am bringing my friend Molly (a tattoo fiend). She is friends with the tattoo artist and has told me that she enjoys music and conversation while getting inked, so I'm following her lead. If it doesn't work out...then silence it is.

It took me a while to design the tattoo, but I know exactly what it is.

Great advice guys! Keep it going!

You don't have to tip that much.
Especially on more expensive pieces.

i'd say tip 20 unless the artist is a friend of yours; then, buy them some beer later on that night to celebrate.

Mostly all good advice. So to recap and add a few things:
~ Be sober and don't drink the night before.
~ Drink lots of water starting a few days in advance.
~ Eat something before showing up.
~ Do have showered, its just polite.
~ Tip well, but you don't have to go overboard.
~ I always bring a friend. Its someone to talk to and it gets your mind off the task at hand.
~ Do know exactly what you want and don't be afraid to tell the artist that. Some will give you input on what they think will look good, but if you have what you want in mind, just say so.
~ Make sure to follow the cleaning procedures for the healing tattoo. Everyone gives different advice on that and your particular artist will tell you what he thinks is best. You don't want it to get infected or scab up badly.
~ Have fun! Getting a tattoo is an awesome experience.

dont be late, but dont show up an hour early (it makes it seem like your trying to rush us). Have fun, its Your tattoo. Ask questions if you have them.(its better to know than assume, and your artist shouldnt mind) Sit still, it helps. The food, water and sober things are all great ideas. And if you like the work and plan on going back to this guy, a tip would be a decent idea. Even ten bucks on something simple conveys the guesture, and getting off on a good start with your future guy is going to help you in the long run. My gift membership here was a tip from someone whos a girl here. Its appreciated. did i spell that right ?

exactly . I would rather be known as " the asshole who tips alot / too much " than , " the asshole who doesn't tip enough / at all " Otherwise all the info given so far is good advice . Keep in mind that everyone's tattoo experiance is different and what works for one might not be the best idea for the other . You will never know until you get a tattoo and experiance it for yourself . I think you will find that it isn't that bad , and you will be on your way to getting more tattoos in the future , especialy if you have a good first experiance .

I always tip if not in cash then in a nice note with a fat joint inside, something homegrown, green and fluffy haha...I agree with the rest DO know what you want but also be open to stylized changes or changes of locale..I've wanted pieces before that I thought would go one place but then the artist will show me where else it would fit better and give better flow with the body...and I was grateful!!

I thought for sure this was going to be another thread where some asshole said, "I'm going to get my first tattoo tomorrow. What should I get, doodz?" I don't come to the boards that often, but it seems like a thread like that it up every time I do.

You let me down, man.
