OH.
MY.
GOD.

How excited am I?

Variety magazine reports that The Jim Henson Company is planning a sequel to the 1982 smash hit and cult favorite "The Dark Crystal".

The film, which is titled "The Power of the Dark Crystal", has been written by David Odell (The Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show) and Annette Duffy. No director is yet attached to the film which will start shooting this fall and is planned for a 2007 release. The film will combine live-action animatronic characters with CG animation. Like its predecessor, the film hopes to push the boundaries of puppetry, special effects, and visual story-telling.

The story for the film is set many years after the original movie. The first film's original heroes Jen and Kira are now king and queen, and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

In other exciting Muppet news, Henson Studios have also announced they will start production on a Fraggle Rock movie in 2006.

Henson says that the project will find the Fraggles having to come out into “outer space” (a.k.a. the human world). The group will have a wild adventure as they find themselves in this weird and wild new world, far away from Fraggle Rock. Henson has also stressed that the story will be aimed at both children and young adults (as they hope to appeal to new young fans, and also the fans that grew up on the show). The original Fraggle characters are planned to be the stars of the film. The early work on developing the project is underway within the Henson Company and they hope to start shooting sometime next year.

All I have to say is ... it's about time.

Ooh, the Dark Crystal has real potential. Let's hope they don't fuck it up like most sequels end up being. I must go watch the original now (and Labyrinth too, damn you Snottlebocket wink )

But Fraggle Rock? In "outer space." This will be another stupid 'fish out of water' story that takes it far away from its roots. Great, another childhood favorite ruined by a movie, like Masters of the Universe. Dammit.

Wait. Which movies are we supposed to be excited about Hollywood making a sequel of, and which are we supposed to be all, "OMG, why is Hollywood ruining my childhood?" about?

YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAHH My special box set (with nothing special in it, besides a poster) will feel better...
tongue tongue tongue tongue tongue tongue tongue tongue
Definitely my favourite childhood movie.

Why spoil the Fraggles like that???
*sigh* its the like the difference betwen the Muppet's Show and Seasame Street.

The muppets have their own world, and it worked in their own way, I always found the movies less appealing and lost interest (because of age probably) after the Great Muppet Caper, but then I also like Meet the Feebles. EL SUICIDO LOCO

I am worried that they will destroy (just because of the current political climate and the fact the first one didn't do that well) the kind of universe they created in the Dark Crystal,

It was nice that it was mature enough to treat kids with respect. Characters got hurt and died, things weren't as simple as good and evil (or at least they both come from the same source and therefore both neccesary) and some of it was scary. The Garthims used to frighten the hell out of me, even more the Skessis, but it was GREAT on that level.

the original fraggle characters? is there a dvd out so we can play catch-up on that storyline?

I can say I was too impressed with Henson's latest production, "Mirrormask" but then I've come to discover that Gaiman as a storyteller is more used to a paper medium.

I would have prefered Dark Crystal 2 to follow the characters of fizgig and that one witch lady whose name slips my mind right now. Or at least have nothing to do with the crystal spliting again, because that's just not what I would imagine.

the fraggle rock movie will follow origional lines as long as it is careful on how they do it. because the origional shows were all about the exploration of "outer space" aka the human world. the very first fraggle rock episodes had to do with the uncle going into outer space and exploring it, and sending postcards back to the other fraggles. so its not like they are coming completely out of left field with this idea. though i dont have much faith in the film, its still exciting to hope for.

actually, Brian Henson is keen to bring back Frank Oz and Brian Froud and the original creative team... so there is still hope.

a Henson studios sidenote: did anyone see Mirrormask?

(Think Labrynth meets Brothers Quay)

Yes, lots of CG but with a certain amount of finesse (or maybe I'm just trying to keep my hopes up).

Though, I must admit... the Fraggle movie sounds an awful lot like Muppets Take Manhattan.

i -think- she was talking about keeping her hopes up for the sequel to the dark crystal, not mirrormask.
