In an article found in the Winnipeg Free Press, Winnipeg's senior community is shown in a bit of a different light. Most people tend to think of senior women as grandmothers that bake, play card games, and have that blue-grey hair. Some of these women may fall into that category, but are out to prove that being a senior is not a stigma. They believe it to be a thing of beauty, worth showing to the whole world for what it is.

There are about three dozen women that wish to be photographed nude (the article notes that it will be very tasteful) for a charity calendar here in Winnipeg. The story itself is inspiring and perhaps shocking to the younger generation (myself included). When reading what these women had to say, I must admit that I was moved. The charity has not even been selected yet, showing that these women want to be shown for what they are; real human beings. As written in the article, a woman named Sophia had the following to say:

"Those Botox and plastic surgery ads piss me right off. I love getting old. Having had cancer at 37 and thinking I might never live to see wrinkles means that I savour every wrinkle that appears.

The mere fact that this article makes people uncomfortable points to the fact that society has its teeth firmly in our opinion of beauty. Hope lies in the fact that there are people out there that want to change that ideal.

Hm. Older ladies nude for charity ... that'd make a good movie!

[edited to add: "One sent a photo of an exquisitely tattooed back, naked from the waste up." Ahem. Does he mean anything below the midsection doesn't matter?]

This is not new the Brits did it first in 2000! The women of the Rylstone and District Women's Institute in Yorkshire northern England made a calendar and raised nearly the equivalent of $800,000 for charity. The money was used to fund cutting edge research into lymphoma and leukaemia at the University of Leeds. The film “Calendar Girls” was fiction inspired by their efforts.

And people wonder why I don't eat fried eggs......

But I kid. There's actually two towns in my area that senior ladies did this, including the town I grew up in.

What's remarkable about it, though, is that they keep wanting to do it, even with wrinkly specimens of their own ilk (of which I know I am becoming. Still, it's remarkable).
