I'm telling you all, it's not an addiction. I can quit whenever I want.

Just not right now. I'm talking on AIM and there's message boards and I'm getting music and stuff. I'm busy, you know? confused

I was just about to say that.. biggrin

I have a hard time leaving the computer because I have problems deciding on which AIM away message to use.. blush Seriously, I've made people wait because I couldn't decide.

I also go through withdrawal of not being on a computer, it gets bad after a while. When we go up north for a week in summer, I start going a bit looney after about two or three days.. confused skull

From page 3 of the NYTimes article:

Some therapists and Internet addiction treatment centers offer online counseling, including at least one 12-step program for video game addicts, which is controversial. Critics say that although it may be a way to catch the attention of someone who needs face-to-face treatment, it is akin to treating an alcoholic in a brewery, mostly because Internet addicts need to break the cycle of living in cyberspace.

yeah..that is genius at work right there... surreal

"Internet addiction" is just another way of saying "I don't understand what the internet is for". The internet is just a tool, and some people find that tool more useful than other people find it. It's like saying that you suffer from "music addiction" because you enjoy listening to music all day.

Quick, someone call Merck, there's a new wonder drug waiting to be patented. Call it Atonal: to curb cravings for ordered sound.

my problem is people are worried because you can get addicted to the internet but the internet is not reaslly different then life.

I mean, you arent addicted to reading the paper every morning, or talking to your co-workers, or coming home and listening to music. But apperently when you sit online and read news, talk to people all day, and listen to music, it's a bad thing.

And i realize the kinda scary lvl of addiction I am sure some people have but seriously, it bugs me to know we waste our money on this shit. Go cure cancer for fucks sake and leave the internet junkies at their keyboards.

(and for the memo i used to never get offline, however i have a 50hr the week job right now so I dont have much of a choice about signing off)

Well I think that's true to some extent, but just like music could become a problem if you'd rather put on your headphones than deal with people or your problems, the internet can be used as a means of escape -- and sometimes we really shouldn't be escaping.

I would rather put on headphones than deal with people and use the internet to escape. I'm not an addict, I'm anti-social.

It seems people won't be happy until everyone "suffers" from something.

Woo hoo! this means it's not my fault! I get to blame all my problems on the internet!

Exactly! I look at it like this, if an alcoholic sits in his house and drinks it's not societies problem, it's his. Same with drug addicts and men who whack off in front of the TV watching porn. If someone wastes their life online, THEY ARE NOT HURTING ANYONE, except possibly theirselves. If they don't want to help themselves no one else can do anything to help them. It's Darwinism, man. My entire family is a group of alcoholics and drunks. Two have died from it and the rest are degenerating, physically and mentally. One got help and got better... because she wanted to. And to compare sitting in front of a computer all day to the strife these familial addicts caused the rest of us kinda pisses me off.

Anyways, this idea is stupid, they will make a drug to "treat" it and I'll continue to avoid people no matter what addiction they've been given by "professionals."

hmm..
Well I know that I can't even watch a movie or hangout with my friends at home without checking my suicide girls and my myspace and my mail. Infact we have two computers, xbox live and digital cable on demand and they are always ALL on! Everytime we have people over no matter how many bottles we have to drink and how many crazy things happen.. there is always one person waiting to see if they got a new message.. ha. so atleast im not alone.. We actually only have one friend of the 30 or so who come over here daily who doesn't do this.. and he's addicted to his video games.. He always has so much to say about us and our stupid computer usage.. "Get off the computer you are all losers!" But whatever..
I mean, it depends what you use it for.. I like to look stuff up.. If im watching a movie i always look to see what other movies the actors are in on IMDB. and if I want to know the lyrics to a song I just get on my laptop.. Most of our time is spent on Game Show Network playing eachother online.. I check suicide girls and myspace constantly to see if anything has changed.. any messages were written so i can write back.. And of course I have my daily spill of Consumption Junction, Tshirthell and Craigslist and my weekly check on Post Secret.. Okay, it sounds like a lot.. but its all pretty basic fast checks..
so what if im obsessive compulsive.. My typing has gotten so good.. I know theres no way in hell i will ever be out of work.. ha.

I think it's quite possible that there are people experiencing real compulsions related to the internet. I'd also say that they're a tiny fraction at best of the people who simply find various forms of computer/internet related activities to be their most enjoyable pastimes. And that because computers and especially the internet are relatively new, many older people don't understand this and want to "cure" people of their "habit". My mom, for example, has never considered my socializing via the internet as real social interaction and would like me to get out of the house more. And she's relatively cool about such things.

Besides all you really need to cure internet addiction is new Internet Explorer .. YUCK!

If it wasn't winter and there was anything to do other than sit in a bar with 3 other guys and watch ESPN or go to a bar filled with college kids I'd be all about it.

Seriously the only place open is Steak and Shake and a gas station.
