Peter Chung became very popular with the stoners back in 1991 when MTV’s Liquid Television premiered the animated Aeon Flux shorts. Since then Chung created the half hour Aeon Flux show, directed the Matriculated segment of The Animatrix and The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury.

For the past year Chung has spent his time collecting and remastering all the animated Aeon Flux material into one amazing DVD box set.

I prided myself on being the only person I knew who had all the liquid televisions on tape and DVD... then the box set comes out and now all these kids are gonna get a crack and this "well before it's time" series.
However .. Chung, why you break my heart? My god that movie hurts.

If you must call me a philistine for this, do it while animation is still in the initial stages of emerging as a legitimate art form: Peter Chung is my favorite visual artist of all time. The man has a design aesthetic that I would expect from an alien culture enjoying millions of uninterrupted years of artistic evolution. If he ever gets involved in the world of patentable object design here on Earth, it might just usher in a new age.

Also, the man is an artist in the purest sense of the word. His vision is only diluted by the ugly machinations of capitalism.

You assume too much, Vivid. Thanks to byzantine copyright laws and tyrannical publishers like MTV, people like Chung often have no creative control over the direction of franchises they create. From a Usenet-archived 1998 interview of uncertain origin:

…
6. What's next for "Aeon Flux"? More animation? The movie?

A live-action film is in development. But there's no script or director yet. I'll probably serve as a consultant on it, but I'm pretty sure I won't be asked to direct. I'm planning to direct in the near-future, but handling a $60,000,000 "Aeon Flux" film would be too much responsibility for my first time.

7. Is "Aeon Flux" the first project you've sold movie rights to?

Actually, I don't own "Aeon Flux". I created the character and series, but MTV owns all the rights. Before "Aeon Flux", I had done a lot of development work for proposed series, but "Aeon Flux" was the first one of mine to actually become a show.

Fucking sad, isn’t it? Particularly in light of this quote Mr. Epstein (quite diplomatically) extracted from Mr. Chung:

I was not involved in the movie. ... It’s ironic that it’s exactly the type of movie I was trying to make fun of.

Pete ain’t no whore. He didn’t make a dime from the film and MTV didn’t let him say a fucking thing about how to make it not suck. If you didn’t already hate MTV, I hope you’re now preparing a series of letter bombs.

Personally, I’m going to go watch “Reign: The Conquerer” a few dozen times to cool off.

Funny story, I bought my Aeon Flux t-shirt from him at the Comicon. He asked my opinion on who to play Aeon in a live action movie.

I always saw Kate Beckinsale as the perfect Aeon Flux.

...did....did you read the interview?

I was not involved in the movie. In writing it or visualizations or anything and it is very different from what I would have done. It’s ironic that it’s exactly the type of movie I was trying to make fun of.

He had nothing to do with it, hell...he probably found out about it the same way most people first heard about it, on a news site. He has no legal say in anything involving it. He's lucky that he was even involved with the animated DVD set.

I want to watch this, because it's Charlize Theron, but part of me would probably burn and wither away underneath the sadistic glow of a really shitty movie.

The DVD verson is still good. It's a bit more of a "WTF??" moment
then before, but all that means it you get to sit there and think about it some more after words. It's like poetry, if you're smart enough, and you're meant to get it, you will.

I'd like to own both copies, the original video box set and the DVD but right now all I have is the DVD one.

Aeon Flux was my first anime, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

That movie though, oh dear god that movie. I remember at first being so excited and then feeling so crushed after the first movie preview. I may or may-not watch it. I know on thing for certain, I'm not going to bother to go see it at the theater. I'm getting sick of hollywood taking something that's perfectly fine and turning into some bastardized verson of what once was. Same reason why I'm afraid to go see Memoire of a Geisha, of course, what I've heard about that book, it may be a bastardization or a bastardization, but then again, facts always tend to get screwed over when it comes to taking from real life things and making them into something for fiction and entertainment.

And now I'm just rambling, so I'm gunna shut up and leave you all alone now.

I can honestly say after watching Sauce Packets DVD set, and remembering quite well watching it on TV. The only difference I notice is he crisped out the imaging to look better on our new age bigger and better TV’s... anyone else notice anything annoyingly new... I didn't...

Sorry, just read your reply. The first person to pop into my head was a stripper I knew. So I just told him no one came to mind. He thought of Famke Jansen. This was right after her debut in Goldeneye.

famke would have been a very good choice. she has those sharp lines unlike charlize who is very soft
