Billy Shire Fine Arts in LA is home to a new art show featuring Elizabeth McGrath's latest group of freak friends: "Altarwise by Owl-Light." The exhibit stars a tattooed giraffe named "Jerry," the two-headed dogs of "The Black Madonna," and Miss Henrietta Hammerhead the "Quinceanera." Everything That Creeps, a book of McGrath's art, will be published by Last Gasp in January of 2006.
The first collected work of the LA underground art worlds favorite wunderkind, Elizabeth McGrath. 112 pages of full-color photos and detail shots reveal the exquisitely complex details of her sweetly twisted creatures, giving a glimpse of what the City of Misfit Toys might have become had it been saved by Satan rather than Santa. Upon first viewing, McGraths colorful, mummified creatures are gothic oddities, but their undeniable artistry immediately draws one in, revealing their touching curiosities, transforming their grotesqueness into tortured beauty.
very cool... this is right down the street from work.
its quite amazing
wander into the back of the gallery where they store stuff, there are several of her older pieces there as well... and for a real treat, over by my place is a store called "Rosemarry's Billygoat" just west a few doors on Sunset where it meets Hollywood and Hillhurst.
the place is like a Brothers Quay/Tool Video and sells cloths and creepy stuff... well, they have one of Liz's lil goat sculptures
