So someone automatically becomes a 'so-called' comedian when you don't like their comedy?

.

No, it has nothing to do with whether or not I like them, it has to do with whether or not they're funny.

I know that humor is a subjective concept, and everyone has a different idea of what "funny" is, but to make a broad generalization, I'd say that it has to at least elicit a laugh from the audience.

Humor is a subjective concept, and that's all there is to it.

I've heard pretty much everything David Cross has to offer, and I can guarantee you that the audience was laughing, along with myself and whoever else was listening to it with me at the time.

Perhaps you missed where I wrote FACT. That makes it irrefutable.

You didn't use a period, thus making your irrefutable ''fact'' nothing more than a random assortment of letters. FACT.

David Cross has bad material, boring delivery punctuated by "uhs" and "ums" and shitty timing. Add that to the fact that his ramblings about politics and religion don't really go anywhere funny, and you have a "so-called" comedian.

I did want to mention, David Cross, like a few other comedians I like such as Billy Connolly and Eddie Izzard, doesn't write any of his material out. It's stream of consciousness, which leads to lots of rambling, ums, and some gratuitous swearing. I feel, though, that the more spontaneous quality of the humor makes up for it. I mean, I don't like have a measuring stick or anything, but it makes me laugh and is more engaging to me than someone doing a set routine. Usually. Stella fucking cracked me up with a set routine, but that's a whole other thing.

Also, you mentioned not liking higher thinking comedians, and that's sort of what I respond to. I'm thoroughly bored with most topics for comedy. Sex and the differences between the sexes and my wife and farts and poops and airplanes.... I've gotten tired of it, and most of the times you know the punchline before they say it anyway. Politics strikes me as good fodder, just because it's always changing. History strikes me as good fodder, just because no one ever talks about it. And hey, telling a good funny story never hurt anyone.

I know, different strokes and all that, I just wanted a flipside perspective in here.

I never said I didn't like higher thinking comedians. I actually said quite the opposite:

I have no problem with politcal or social humor. Pryor pulled it off, so does Carlin, so does Lewis Black, because they're funny. You're right, by the way, about Eddie Izzard being funny as hell. He pulls off the stream of concsiousness routine extremely well. I suppose we'll just agree to disagree on David Cross.
