World Wildlife Fund researchers have been tracking, and hope to trap, a "mysterious carnivore" on Borneo.

Swiss-based environmental group WWF said on Monday its researchers photographed the strange animal, which looks like a cross between a cat and a fox, in the dense, central mountainous rainforests of Borneo.

"This could be the first time in more than a century that a new carnivore has been discovered on the island," said the WWF in a statement.

The mammal, slightly larger than a cat with red fur and a long tail, was photographed twice by a camera trap at night.

Yeah, it's not Bigfoot or anything, but it's still pretty damn cool.

What's NOT cool is this:

Researchers hope to confirm the discovery by setting cage traps to catch a live specimen, but warn that Indonesian government plans to clear the rainforest to create the world's largest palm oil plantation may interfere with plans, WWF said.

The proposed plantation scheme, funded by the China Development Bank, is expected to cover an area of 1.8 million hectares, equivalent to about half the size of The Netherlands ...

Down with unknown species!
Up with palm oil plantations!

Fucking idiots.

Is there a serious need for palm oil I am not aware of? I am no expert, but this must have an influence on palm oil futures. Maybe I should go short on it.

Welcome to the world of conservation. To quote a lecturer of mine:

"What truely makes a decadent society is when they place more value of economy than ecology, when material wealth as opposed to natural wealth is more important to the people".

material wealth is expendable, natural wealth is not.

Alas Palm Oil is used in almost all liquid soaps along with hundreds of other products. its a very lucrative industry especially for a country like Indonesia.

Don't forget the Grizzly Bear is almost as Endangered... any US senators like to voice objection to the gun nuts shooting the lot of them?

EDIT: Inspite of my cynicism, I am very pleased that this species has been discovered, if they can capture a good number of them then they may be able to conserve them in zoo conditions, not idillic but at least they won't be extinct.

PALM OIL PLANTATION?

puke

I need to make sure I don't have anything with palm oil in it.

The animal discovery is awesome, but a bit soured by everything else.

Oh there is a new animal! Let's destroy it's habitat (along with the habitat of a bunch of other animals and plants)!

And the trapping thing, I don't like the sound of that either. I mean I know it's to "confirm the discovery" and all, but ... *sigh*

That's going to be tricky. Palm Oil is in a lot more than you might think. Cosmetics, bathroom related products, a wide range of processed food. It was covered in something I saw about the loss of habitat for orangutans, which have got to be one the worlds all time wonderful creatures.

We are the earth's 6th mass extinction event frown

It has the potential to be very cute and cuddly, that may very well save it.

If I had seen the picture really small instead of like this, that would have been my first reaction, too. I love the long-necked dinosaurs.

They have higher resolution pictures at the WWF site I linked in the article.
Same pics, just much bigger ... if you want a better look.
