I'm lost
June 2005

The international art show Art Basel took place in Miami this past weekend and featured the debut of a new book by famed photographer David LaChapelle, Artists and Prostitutes from Taschen. Artforum.com reports on the launch party for the book where LaChapelle's "robosexual" muse Amanda Lepore floated naked-as-usual inside a plexiglass box perched in the middle of the pool. The book comes in a bright pink box, is being published in a limited editon of 2,500, and costs $1,250.

I beat the mass exodus from the beach and dashed to the new, hyper-chic Setai Hotel, where Taschen was hosting a launch party for David LaChapelle's book Artists and Prostitutes. Caught in the inevitable crush at the door, I ran up against a burly bouncer growling at a pushy, black-leather-Yankees-cap-and-gold-chain-wearing youth to "stay back." "I'm David's personal assistant," the would-be entrant piped, "and if I'm going to leave I will be escorted off. I need to get in right now to deal with the slide show." I slipped through along with Isaac Julien, his boyfriend Mark Nash, his onscreen star Vanessa Myrie, and his assistant Kelly. Inside, we immediately spotted LaChapelle's muse, robosexual tranny Amanda Lepore, who was perched—nude of course—inside an illuminated plexiglass structure in the middle of the pool and leafing through a copy of LaChapelle's vapid tome. (Even Lepore couldn't be bothered to look through the volume, replete with her own image—she tossed her hair, crossed and uncrossed her legs that "cost as much as a house," and cast absent Botox stares at the guests.) Grinning, Julien appraised the spectacle: "Perfect."

David LaChapelle is my favorite contemporary photographer, but I'd never pay $1,250 for any book.

lachapelle in my opinion is slightly over rated, and lepore couldn't be any more gruesome. his doc rize was pretty interesting though.

"Even when I dressed up as a boy people thought I was a girl. I was always the smallest in the class. I remember some substitute teachers weren't sure what I was. When I was 13, I grew my hair long and arched my eyebrows and wore really light makeup. I was into rock n roll music so I used that as an excuse for my look. I did whatever I could get away with.

School was really hard. I didn't get beat up but the other kids would make fun of the way I looked and my gestures. That always makes you strong though. Once you are an outsider, you tend to follow your own path. Creativity comes from that. In one way it made me really withdrawn, but being different does amazing things for you. I probably see things that other people don't see. I think it makes you more compassionate and I'm still drawn to outcasts."

Yeah, I like LaChapelle, I love Taschen Books, but isn't the decimal point misplaced?

Sometimes (often) people tell me I'm lazy & fucked up........but then I read this & realize I'm gonna be rich! Thanks long-term art market!

Seriously folks, buy art.........it's the only practical investment you can sit & stare at when you're high.

Edited to add "Practical" Investment. Buy Art Now.

It's like a lot of things. You start out with an idea. It's a great idea, brilliant, and you're beautiful.

But then... you know... things happen. You get sidetracked. You lose focus.

And then, before you know it, you and your goofy friends are just ten different kinds of fucking out of control. surreal
