Well, if it's going to upgrade, he should move onto the next form-factor for purposes of future upgradeability. An PCI-e 6800GS (same performance as a 6800GT...a step below the 6800 Ultra) will run you around 200 bones, which ain't too shabby for the performance. A comparable AGP card will cost you 60-80 dollars more.

Keith: What are the specs of your current computer? Just a bit curious.

(I second the DS reommendation)

Our nicest computer is a Pentium 4 2.4ghz with 512mb RAM and Geforce FX 5700. That's my wife's computer. ;-) My computer, the hoopty-mobile, is a Pentium 4 1.8 ghz with 512mb RAM and Geforce 4 MX 440.

there are pros and cons to buying or building.

console pros:
out of the box usability
virtually no need for tech support
guaranteed games (whether good or not)

console cons:
usually graphics capabilities are limited vs PC capabilities
seems to be expensive in the longrun b/c of accessories
games are sometimes hard to pick (due to their playability)

pc pros:
you can compare prices on components
ultimate upgradeability
graphics for games are usually better for a game thats on PC and console

pc cons:
when you upgrade, you have to upgrade the whole rig, otherwise you risk bottlenecking
if you don't buy the right stuff, you'll end up troubleshooting for days
games usually take hella long to get started
there aren't as many games for PC as for consoles (though they're usually the cream of the crop)

just weigh it out, lol, i don't think my list was very much help...
