Reuben Wu and (Bulgarian born) Mira Aroyo from the UK band Ladytron have been on a DJ tour in support of their newest album, Witching Hour (2005, Ryko/Universal). I called the very hip Jupiter Hotel in Portland to speak with them before a recent gig. When I asked the operator for Reuben Wu, in true hipster form the hipster operator was like Ladytron! Cool!
I got to interview Helen and Daniel. They are really quite fun. Oh, and you can see the names of their keyboards taped onto them and I asked them about it too. It's funny to hear that question repeated. It's like a weird Deja Vu.
I felt a bit silly, because they are really down to Earth and my questions got a bit too deep ( started bringing in references to the Bauhaus movement, Walter Gropius blah...looked blankly at me and me felt lame for being...um...pretentious...). They seriously are just doing what they love and anything read into them is simply tacked on by observers.
In a society where the general public appears to be content with mediocrity, where music is concerned, Ladytron is a welcome reprieve! The SG community is an exception to that concept and it prides me to be a member. Keep up the good work.
I had the pleasure to spend a nice day with Reuben and Mira on a cold november day in Quebec City during that Dj tour ; they are a sweet bunch.
Hopefully they'll come back as a band in the city this year. Witching Hour is totally good, as well as their other albums ; wholeheartedly recommended.
I just wanted to point out that Auren is in the band 'Rocket', and their cd is really good. Excellent in fact. Go and buy it through Auren's page. It rocks.
Great interview! I love Ladytron. I actually got into them by way of SG Radio way back when. I had tickets to see them last year, but two days before the show my friend Chris suddenly decided he couldn't go because of some religious holiday.
