Donnie Darko is superb.smile

Why is Passion of the Christ there... that a) had a big budget b) was just a guy getting mauled for 2 hours...

Wasn't Requim for a Dream an Indie flim?

I'm with you on the Requiem thing. Also surprised Pi was not present.

If Night of the Living Dead made the list then so should The House on the Left famous for only two reasons, it was one of Wes Craven's first films and the disemboweling scene.

So basically gorey equals good horror. Amazing commentary. Not that Last House on the Left isn't amazing.

No, actually that wasn't what I meant

Oh. What did you mean? I love Last House, so I'm not really disagreeing with you (although I also love Living Dead) but I don't think the disembowlment scene alone makes it worthy of any list.

I'm going to make a list of the 50 most useless, pretentious lists ever made. This will be number 3.

I like the IMDb top rated titles. Closer to my taste.

Indeed... How could Empire have left out Dr. Stranglove?!?

Pull off Memento (which was waaaay overrated) and the Tarantino flicks, and I'm in agreement. Add in Lolita (way more controversial than any of Tarantino's regurgitations), I'd bring Clerks in from the other list, though not at number 4, and a couple other favs, which I'm sure are subjective to each of us.

Feel the same. Memento. Overrated. Clerks. Right. Thirtysomething.

In ten years, will anyone, anywhere think that either Donnie Darko or Sideways were one of the top ten indie films of all time?

Doubtful.

I will remember the whipping Sandra Oh puts on Thomas Haden Church.

Not quite thirtysomething yet, but officially the last year you get considered part of Gen X, so yeah.

Seconded. I liked Donnie Darko a lot the first time I saw it, but it just didn't hold up with repeated viewings. I still like it now, but I don't love it anymore.

Sideways can kiss my ass.

It probably won't be in the top ten, but Sideways will absolutely be remembered. It got written up all over the place, from mainstream publications to more obscure film criticism magazines, and may well be the most acclaimed movie in recent years. It'll be on the list.

So will, and so should, The Blair Witch Project. It's not that I even really liked it, per se. It was interesting once, but it didn't really scare me and I don't feel the need to see it again. It was just that it cost the studio like 2 or 3 million to buy and made over 100 million. It was a different and bizarre way of making a film, too (ditch actors in woods with satellite tracking system, basically). Whether or not the result is determined to hold up, the point is that low-budget arthouse movies can be a mainstream success. And the impact of it has been huge, even though the movie itself pretty much fizzled after a lot of interest.

Once again, we're all (myself including) mixing our criteria. For example, no matter how important Sideways may be, I till think it's a crap film. As far as Passion is concerned, I can't say. I left about halfway in. I couldn't take it.

A lot of my favorite movies made it, that's nice. Nice to see City of God especially.

Is Wes Anderson not some independant guy? I seriously don't know, for some reason I assumed.

I am, but I'm not exactly sure what the criteria is, so I'm just justifying.

City Of God should have been in the top 10.

And as for the French New Wave?
