The rural county of Gloucestershire in the UK received a massive dump of fresh snow on Monday evening, bringing chaos to the area.

Motorists in Gloucestershire have been returning to reclaim cars abandoned during Monday night's heavy snowfall.

Up to 400 drivers left their vehicles and walked in freezing temperatures as accidents and treacherous conditions made roads impassable.

Wait before you rush to get the snowboards out. When we English talk about "Heavy snow" we mean a few inches. It can't have been that bad if someone managed to walk an hour and a half to get home in it. I'm in Cheltenham and we had maybe an inch. It's not as if we didn't know snow was coming. People have been talking about North Atlantic Oscillation for months, and Cornwall suffered from the snow just this week so people should have been prepared.

It wouldn't be so bad if a few inches of snow was unusual for the UK, but this is the same weather that we have every fucking year.

On the first day of snow any given year it is advisable to drive very cautiously. Not because snow makes it any more difficult to drive, at all. It does not. However people insist on behaving like morons when their is snow on the road, and cannot be disuaded.

Hell, I live in Canada and drivers ALWAYS freak out on the first morning with snow on the ground! It takes hours to get anywhere because people haven't put their winter tires on, or they're being overcautious, or maybe they're blinded by the sun glare reflecting off the white ground...who knows. But they're definitely fucking idiots and when I am queen they shall all be shot.

I'm also amazed that a few inches of snow can bring the infrastructure to a grinding halt - it's laughable.

You'd think the government would learn, wouldn't you. But strangely enough the same thing happens every year - it's an annual event.

"I'd skidded into a kerb and couldn't move the car."

I have never before in my life seen the word curb spelt like that despite a British father...is that an all over England thing...? So weird.

Yup, that's the usual UK spelling. My dictionary (1922 oxford english) has both words, although curb has a number of aditional uses.

Northern Ohio's a little better.

DC drivers are terrible in snow.

If you think our inability to manage an inch of snow is bad enough, you really don't want to know what happens when leaves fall on the railways during the autumn...

usually there's so little snow and the roads are gritted well enough that you needn't slow down or be any more careful as if it were drizzle ... but you always get the one driving in the middle lane on the motorway at 40mph with their fog light on causing tail backs for miles mad

That said, there was a hill on a lane back home that I had to give up trying to get up when it were icy

I have been delivering for over a year (through last winter) and this so far up in Sask, Canada - and it is much better to drive a bit slower with caution than to go the speed limit. We have horrible snow removal/gravelling system here though, and people are always sliding through lights and into things. I've avoided at least 50 accidents since I started this job. It's crazy!

I still hate snow... *sniff*
