"Ooh-la-la!" she breathed as he smelt the clean aroma of her short bobbed hair and the rain-sodden grass around it. "Oooh-la-jolly well-la!"

And so they made love together in the pouring rain, with Nurse Murray emitting a stream of girlish exclamations which seemed to indicate that she was enjoying herself. "Gosh", "Golly" and, as things moved towards a conclusion, even "Tally ho!"

Tally ho?! No one says that. Ever.

Literature often contains the oss - the obligatory sex scene. But unfortunately, like James Bond, the tendency is to "do it up one better than the last time", and thus end up with something that has no semblance to any reality. But really. Come on, a lobster? Eating a lobster is one thing. But fucking one? I don't think so.

There was actually a case wherein a woman bought a lobster, and held a lighter or blowtorch to its face to get it to whip it's tail back and forth. She held the tail next to her vagina. What a sick fuck.

It sounds like Brando was critiquing his own writing as he was writing it.

I'm going to yell "Tally ho!" the next time I come. It's on my list of "Things to do before you turn 30". kiss

"Oh, Lord," he cried out. "I'm a-comin'!" biggrin biggrin biggrin

When I read that I just burst out laughing. I had this flash of Sanford and Son with Red Foxx , "It's the big one, I'm a-coming Elizabeth"

I love these awards. I'd just like everyone to stop and think about this for a moment. Lobster sex, tally ho, I'm a-coming, at some point all of these writers had to hand their story to a friend, editor or publisher, and not one of them said, "Are you sure you don't want to change this?"

Tally ho dear reader, tally ho. biggrin

By the way, I didn't get Shalimar the Clown, but from the look of that quotation, Salman Rushdie's gone way, way downhill. I mean, his dialogue was never natural (his stories really make it impossible), but goddamn.

I am reading Shalimar the Clown right now. The context makes the passage much better. It is a good book so far, so don't be too eager to dismiss the whole book based off of one line of dialogue.

My guess is that the big names on the list don't have editors who would too strenously ask them to lose or change anything at this point.

As for the others: I dunno.

I'm not, per se, but that line in particular was definitely discouraging. Either way, I have enough of his stuff to get through that I'm not really worried about it.

"Manhood"? Whenever I see a penis referred to as "manhood," I know I'm being cultured.

If I paid for the book then I know I was ripped off.
