The books are family favorites. His 'Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball' album has been a favorite of mine since I was 14 or so. He wrote a ton of songs in addition to the books.

I love Shel! I read a few of his poems from "Where the Sidewalk Ends" a a Banned Book reading in college.

you didn't read his stuff until college? i think i was aware of shel before i even knew how to read, then by age 7 it was all i read.

Oh, no, I discovered him in first grade! But I got up and read aloud his work at a Reading years ago. It seemed so strange to me, then, that a book that meant so much to me as a small child ("Where the Sidewalk Ends") could be on a list of banned books.

I always loved the ABZ book. Particularly the line:

X is for Xylophone...because X is always for Xylophone

I agree. all kids should get to experience Silverstein's poetry while growing up. It's so beautiful. I've been in love with poetry ever since. My favorites are Dirty Dan the world's dirtiest man and the one about the prince who ate nothing but peanut butter sandwhiches!!!

Silverstein is the greatest!!!!!!!!!
