Hey have any of you ever dislocated your shoulder or anything close to that region?

I think I might have tonight during my Jitsu training (a very violent martial art) but I'm not sure. I pretty much popped it back in right away I think but it was still one of the worst pains ever. I'm not really sure if It was my shoulder or something in the top side of my back but my top arm hurts now and feels all heavy. There's weird clicking and things rotating weirdly when I move it too...

I need to know because I'm going to a very violent course on sunday and If I did indeed dislocate something and pop it back in than I probably shouldn't go...

Basically how likely is it that I can still move around a little if I have indeed fucked some stuff up in there and then "popped" it back in?

Jiu means gentle; Jitsu means art. The people who developped the syle took the "gentle" out as to not confuse anyone as to what they were getting into...

I've never done it, but I am pretty sure it would be pretty hard to pop your own dislocated shoulder in by yourself. Maybe it was partially dislocated? Or a tendon just slipped way far out of place or something.

Disclaiminer: I am not a doctor/doctor in training/veternarian. my medical advice is worth exactly dick.

I live in the Uk, meaning I either have to devote my day to go to A & E tomorrow or wait a week to get an appointment... It's great that the NHS is free but really they'd probably tell me to go home and take some pain-killers...

Again I know you guys aren't doctors but there's got to be someone on this site who's dislocated their shoulder and can tell me if my experience is similar and if I'm kidding myself to think I can do my course on Sunday...

Well to be fair, it was incorect of me to say I "just popped" it back in. I was in the middle of a complicated forwards roll and the idiot who threw me pulled so hard I crashed my shoulder as I was rolling [insert the loudest scream you've ever heard] as I was landing back on the mats, it sort of placed itself back together [insert second scream]. I don't really know what I was doing at this pointing other than screaming and wriggling on the floor but I didn't actually consciously push it back in...

it's prefectly possible to dislocate and very quickly reloacte your shoulder. It sounds like the process has strained a few of your ligaments in the area, so I'd avoid doing stuff that strains it for a few weeks at least, because further strain might make things much worse, even to the point of tearing your ligaments (if you do that, your shoulder will *never* be the same again). In the meantime, keep using it so it doesn't freeze up and buy yourself some ibuleve gel for when it gets sore.

Hope it helps smile

T -x-

EDIT: If it persists beyond a few weeks, go see a doctor, you might have torn ligaments, in which case you'll probably want phsyiotherapy.

My shoulder clicks after a bad motorcycle accident. The doctors at the hospital were more concerned about the busted collar bone and fractured wrist to notice any tissue damage in the shoulder. Hopefully you've only hyperextended the tendons and it will heal on it's own. Like Toole said, if it persists more than a few days, go to the clinic.

i have terrible joints...both of my shoulders (more often my right, though) will occasionally pop out of socket. usually it pops back in, but sometimes it doesnt and fixxing it is rather painful. once, it happened during sex. that wasnt cool at all.

in any case, id say it was probably an isolated incident. however, i can tell you for sure that if youre worried about it, youre going to be tense and increase the likelyhood of injuring yourself anyway. so id say take it easy in the meantime.

When we were kids my uncle used to pick up me and my sister by the arms and spin us round in a circle. This practice stopped after he dislocated my sister's arm biggrin
I know she had to go to the doctor to get it sorted. But she did dislocate it another time when my grandparents were babysitting, and they had to call my parents back from an important work dinner thing, and drive to the hospital, and wait in line for hours, before they looked over and noticed it had just popped back itself. So I think they can just go back without you having to do anything.

If I was, the poor bastard would have had to go to hospital: When dislocating, rather than opening further, my jaw clamps down and locks in place! biggrin

I've dislocated both of my shoulders, on separate occasions. You would know if it was -really- dislocated. As in the ball shape protruding under the skin and not being able to move it at all. Yes, it is possible to put it back in by yourself, and it works EXACTLY like in the movies. When it goes back in , there is a "positive lock" sound accompanied by -intense- pain. Brought me to tears, and I went through a crotch rocket accident with no gear on (stupid i know - sue me) so I have a pretty high pain tolerence.

What happend (most likely) is that you popped it out slightly, but didn't actually dislocate it. It might cause some swelling and discomfort, but should be fine in a few days. Its not a "separation" but approximately the same thing. For this, keep ice on it to reduce swelling when you are using it, and heat at night to promote circulation.

Another option is a rotator cuff injury, probably nothing more than a sprain though. If you tore it, you would again be in intense pain, and would most likely need surgery. You seem to not be that badly hurt (thankfully).

I've never broken a bone in my life, but had all sorts of injurys :-p. If you want some shoulder strengthening exercises send me an email or something - I know a lot that will help with it so it doesn't happen again. -JinX

You should see a doctor. It sounds to me like it is not currently dislocated, but there could very easily be some tissue damage that might need to be fixed up. The heavy feeling you talked about would make me thing you might have some damage of some kind.

You can relocate your own shoulder, but it hurts like you wouldn't believe.

Good luck.
