I got an essay due and the suggested reading materials don't cut it for me.

1. In what ways do intersexed and transgendered people challenge assumptions about biological sex (male/female) and the relation between biological sex and gender (masculinity/femininity).

2. How do norms of masculine and feminine appearance create problems for transgendered people?

3. On the basis of these considerations, what conclusions do you draw about the relation between sex and gender?

These are the questions I need to answer.

I'm looking for informative links right now. Interviews with intersexed people and transexuals would be ace, but I'll appreciate just about anything.

The book "As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised A Girl" by John Colapinto is very good.

Whatever else you read up on, you should make yourself aware of the case of David Reimer.

See Wikipedia entry and a book on his case.

Note that he was not intersex or voluntary transgender, but that is in fact why his case matters in terms of the generality of conclusions that can be drawn from babies born intersex or those who choose a different lifestyle or actual gender reassignment.

Thanks for the David Reimer links.

Since I think the simplest reaction is the best: David Reimer's life sucked.

Apparently I picked the right day to find my way online.

I'd be willing to consent to an interview. Email me through my profile; be aware I'll only be online for the next hour or two.

Thanks, I floated a comment your way. Really not confident in my interviewing abilities.

Wasn't there a study recently on the the brains of Male to Female trans genders that showed that there was a specific part of the brain that was actually identical to that of a females brain rather then a male?

it would certianly suggest a biological reason behind it.

http://www.symposion.com/ijt/ijtc0106.htm

A friend of mine who is going through this right now said there have been links to the drug they gave mothers in the 1960s to keep them from miscarrying and/or going into premature labor. Apparently, this happened mostly with male babies (she was born a male). I wish I could remember the name of the drug.

well I think this is mostly a male thing (it obviously happens the other way too but, we do all start off as female to begin with it's alot easier for you not to full be male then it is to almost be male from a brain stand point I would assume.

go to the center. (101 boucke). they've got a ton of stuff there, including a bunch of videos which have lots of interviews and whatnot. ('just call me kade' is a good one, but i dunno if that's what you're looking for.) so just go there...and if you can't find something, ask the people at the desk. they're rad.
