This story really sums up the lengths to which people will go if they think they're dealing with an authority figure.

She was a high school senior who had just turned 18 -- a churchgoing former Girl Scout who hadn't received a single admonition in her four months working at the McDonald's in Mount Washington.

But when a man who called himself "Officer Scott" called the store on April 9, 2004, and said an employee had been accused of stealing a purse, Louise Ogborn became the suspect.

"He gave me a description of the girl, and Louise was the one who fit it to the T," assistant manager Donna Jean Summers said.

Identifying himself as a police officer, the caller issued an ultimatum: Ogborn could be searched at the store or be arrested, taken to jail and searched there.

Summers, 51, conceded later that she had never known Ogborn to do a thing dishonest. But she nonetheless led Ogborn to the restaurant's small office, locked the door, and -- following the caller's instructions -- ordered her to remove one item of clothing at a time, until she was naked.

So these people get a random phone call in the evening from someone claiming to be a police officer, and they never question the things he's telling them to do. On the one hand, the calls this guy made were reprehensible, but the fact that there were more than 60 cases of people who actually followed through is even worse.

Ogborn was sexually abused, humiliated, and worse for hours before someone finally decided something was wrong with what was happening:

It was Simms, the Mount Washington store's maintenance man and a ninth-grade dropout, who refused to play the caller's game.

He had stopped by the restaurant for dessert and coffee when Summers pulled him into the office and handed him the phone. The caller told Simms to have Ogborn drop the apron and to describe her. Simms refused.

"He said, `Something is not right about this,'" Summers recalled in her deposition.

It took a ninth-grade droupout to end it all for her. Not Summers, who was stripsearching her, not Summer's boyfriend, who sodomized her, not the other assistent manager who knew the poor girl was naked in there.

As you can probably guess, a slew of lawsuits have come out of this, but most notable is the fact that McDonald's is placing the blame on Ogborn.

In court papers, McDonald's also has blamed Ogborn for what happened to her — saying that her injuries, "if any," were caused by her failure to realize the caller wasn't a real police officer.

Questioning Ogborn during a deposition, Patterson suggested that although she had no clothes, she could have walked out of the office, but stayed voluntarily to clear her name.

"Did it ever occur to you to scream?" he asked.

Utter heartlessness on behalf of McDonald's. Way to go.

The story is pretty lengthy, but worth reading.

There's also footage from ABC's coverage of the story here.

Well, the stuff about McDonalds blaming the victim isn't on the other thread. Which is horrific, by the way.

Fucking disgusting.

No...McFucking disgusting.

There needs to be a boycott of McDonalds NOW. How anyone can still purchase food there, knowing that they are blaming the victim, is only donating to their fucking defense fund. mad

You think that's disturbing.. allow me to introduce you to Mr. Milgram. His studies held true in the 60's.. and they still hold true today. Most people will blindly follow authority.

Zimbardo 's Stanford Prison experiment proved that even if normal citizens are placed in percieved roles of authority (like the caller guy) most people will obey and acquiesce to their demands.

Well, I know a couple of people on the other thread were wondering aloud if Maccy D's would blame the girl. I guess this answers their question.

Let me preface the statement I'm about to make by saying this: What was done to this girl was so wrong, and the perpetrators should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

That being said, she's TOTALLY hot.

Yeah, I'll agree there...

I gotta wonder, what exactly constitutes sodomy in this case?

according to the news story used for the other thread on the boards about this:

Meanwhile, Ogborn is suing McDonald's and Summers for false imprisonment.

i think mcdonald's knows they're in trouble and is going to be as contrary as they can in this situation. so if that means saying that they think its the poor teenager's fault, then they will do it to protect their interests. but that doesn't stop all of us from thinking that mcdonald's is fucking nuts for saying its the fault of a highschool student who was told to comply otherwise go to jail.

On May 29, 2002, a girl celebrating her 18th birthday -- in her first hour of her first day on the job at the McDonald's in Roosevelt, Iowa -- was forced to strip, jog naked and assume a series of embarrassing poses, all at the direction of a caller on the phone, according to court and news accounts.

i had to re-read this paragraph about a million times and im not done yet.

Okay, let me preface THIS statement by saying that what happened is wrong and disgusting and that I feel very sorry for all the victims in this case.

But seriously, how the fuck can you be that fucking dumb? For christ's sake. How can you believe that your store manager has the authority to strip search you? How can you believe that the manager's boyfriend has the authority to SODOMIZE you? All because some wanker on the phone says so? Fuck that.

It makes me wonder if this girl has had this sort of thing happen to her before; if maybe that's why she didn't scream bloody murder and raise holy hell like most I know would have.

The argument about this specific girl and her past would work if similar things hadn't happened to people in other places under the same circumstances. I think it's clear that the guy on the other end of the phone was targeting stupid people to be the molestors and young people to be the targets for a specific reason.

I think it's also clear that the people who abused the girl actually wanted to do so; a strip search is the closest you could come to a reasonable measure (and it isn't) for catching a thief, the rest was just silly. I don't find the girls lack of a violent response all that suprising; we're conditioned to obey authority figures and older people, and though some teens rebel, plenty of others don't. What I find suprising is that the other employees didn't immediately call the police--they were removed from the situation and have no excuse to have not called.

I can only hope that if I was in any role of a similar situation, I would do the right thing.

Maybe it's just my quiet opposition to authority, but I'd have told the caller to drag himself down here and book me. I think the maintenance man that made everyone stop is an unsung hero.
