I'm interested to see how this turns out. It's funny, in a book by William Gibson part of the background is a guy famous for being the cure to aids. He was some sort of gay prostitute and was exposed to HIV but it turned out he had antibodies for it. His antibodies provided the cure and ushered in a new era of promiscuous sex. Hurray! I hope it works.

Yup, and a lot of african (Nigerian?) prostitutes also have developed immunity to the disease.
No, the Nigerian prostitues have a mutant form of the chemokine receptor HIV uses to infect T cells. They never got HIV to begin with. I'm guessing this guy got a false positive on his original test and was never infected to begin with either. The whole thing sounds dodgy. He's refusing to let anyone run any further tests on him to support his "miracle" claim.
Edited to add: My bad, that BBC article claims something different about the Nigerian prostitutes..

It is connected to HIV... but there are zero clinical trials that link AIDS to HIV.
Ummm...yeah. The burden of proof is definitely on you for this one. The link to between HIV (the virus) and AIDS is pretty substantial. My current microbiology book even discusses the specific pathology (I.E. HOW the HIV virus interferes with the immune system.)
Im in favor of a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy, but that would mean the conspiracy is pretty deep...to include not only all the major pharmaceutical companies, and major research facilities, but all the textbook publishing houses, and every university professor and MB student in the country.
What are they doing with all the newly graduated research students who get into the field and suddenly observe that the HIV virus is not working the way they were taught? I mean, is it like The Firm where they are all assimilated or killed mafia style? Maybe the aliens help :-)

Its been said that something like 10% of europeans have a natural immunity due to some connection between it and the plague.
Yeah it's a genetic mutation that prevents the virus from being hosted into the blood stream. I saw something about it on the Discovery Channell.
wow. I hope they can engineer something that truly works to stop the virus. the vaccine they're working on (there's a study being conducted in SF) will be great, but it'll be bets if they can cure as well as prevent.
I would love to see the articles/references...although I am skeptical...mostly because HIV is a virus and the plague is bacterial. It seems deeply unlikely that one will affect the other in any way at all since they have entirely different pathology. I would need to see the research from a Microbiological standpoint to buy into it.
I don't know if a witch had anything to do with it but yeah he tested positive several times(ruling out a false positive) and the last I heard they can't find it in his body.
Actually, what frightens me is the thought that maybe its not that its gone...but that it has mutated and they just cant find it! That would be bad.
EDIT:
Although, I cant find any references to this (Magic Johnson testing neg) on the web anywhere. Can you link one?

The money is not in the cure for AIDS, it's in the medicine that slows it progression. There will never be a cure unless a worse disease comes along.
How many viral illnesses have a cure? It's a simple, surprisingly small number: Exactly None, Zero. If nothing else, AIDS has motivated the basic research that may one day beat viruses in general.

There was an old story from the BBC about a man who was cured of AIDs. Here is the story, but basically he needed a bone marrow transplant and since they were already going to destroy his immune system and put in something that generates white blood cells they took the extra time to make sure it came from someone with a resistance. Two years later and he's shown no signs of it. Certainly a brute force solution.

For the cynical blokes, who think that pharmaceutical companies are deliberately dancing around a cure in order to sell people a prescription drug forever. Peter Diamandis, the founder of the X Prize and an interesting person to boot, points out that insurance companies are interested in making a cure, and not paying x dollars a month forever, and are willing to pay for it. Also there are no cures for viruses. There is some hope that RNA interference can be used to cure viruses by knocking out their ability to reproduce.

Actually, the story was by Norman Spinrad.
Different story. thestral is talking about Virtual Light by Gibson.
