In ill health since his stroke in 1988, John Fowles passed away yesterday.
Fowles was the author of The Collector, The Magus, and most famously, The French Lieutenant's Woman. He is survived by his second wife. Notoriously reclusive, Fowles spent most of his later years in Dorset, gardening and collecting fossils.
He relished the image of being a 'cantankerous old man of letters', and once complained of feeling persecuted by his readers.
"They want to see you and talk to you. And they dont realise that very often that gets on ones nerves," he said. "
My favourite novel of all time is The Magus, perhaps because i never managed to finish it...

The Collector, The Magus and A Maggot are all incredible books...The Collector even inspired a serial killer Not the kind of thing you want to be remembered for, but still...sad, sad. Never could get through The French Lieutenant's Woman, though...
Two of my top ten are Fowles: French Lieutenant's and the Magus. I was in Lyme Regis in September. Our friends there said he was still in the nursing home. Now he's gone.
