I'm lost

The LA Times follows hipster photographer extraordinaire The Cobra Snake to find out what makes his camera click. His real name is Mark Hunter, he shoots with a digital Canon D20, and he's been deemed "the Ron Jeremy of photography." While The Cobra Snake spends much of his time hanging out with the stars of hipsterdom, he spends the rest of his time riding his bike and waiting to turn 21.

What's next for The Cobra Snake?

A backlash, it seems.

That's the hipster way. As soon as something in the subculture gets widespread attention, it is no longer cool. And then, just as quickly, once it becomes passe, it becomes ironically cool to like it again.

As Hunter graduated from the scenester underground to A-list Hollywood parties, it is unclear where thecobrasnake.com lies on the barometer of cool. But mention Hunter's website across hipster neighborhoods in Los Angeles, and eyes roll.

"For all the people who actually live here, they don't care anymore," says Juanita Garcia, 26, an interior designer who lives in Echo Park. "I haven't checked it in, like, two, three months."

"Something about it just seems forced," said Joey Arak, the New York blogger behind taleoftwocities.org, which spoofs Hunter's photos. People are posing, he says, "like, 'This is how I'm going to be, on purpose.' It just doesn't come off as genuine."

Hipsters are... Interesting. Even Goths don't try so hard to be exactly the opposite of what they are.

Also, 'Die You Trendy Scenester Fuck' is possibly one of the most enlightened statements of this century.

I'd like to see The Cobra Snake and The Bronques in a no-holds-barred deathmatch.

It must be tough to be a hipster, trying to figure out what they're supposed to be bored with from week to week . . .

it could be that as a photographer Im jealous of all the Cred he's getting

when I shot at clubs in LA for a short time a certain club told me they didn't want me anymore because they Didn't look enough like theCobraSnake

that's nuts, those pictures look just like the drunken pics every club here publishes on their website every week.
maybe the people were a little prettier than average but the photography seems nothing special.

His photos are average at best and his ownimage seems very contrived. He is trying too hard I think, but he is LA, and although it is likeable, it tends to breed that atmosphere; but he seems to have accomplished what he wanted: getting more attention.
The funny thing about the attention he's getting is he ends up burning his candle at both ends.
Twice as bright, but burns out twice as fast.
He'll end up having a cameo in a fillm maybe, and he'll be satirizing himself, which in my view equals redundent.
But so is this rambling post on the boob.......going back to bed.

Mj ARRR!!!

I'm not gonna say this guy has *no talent. I mean, he keeps his fingers off the lens, uses flash when it's too dark etc...

But christ, I'm better than him, and I'm 8-steps away from being anything close to prefessional-grade. I know a couple of other photo-buffs friends of mine that are better than him. I've seen a bunch of pics on this site that are miles better as well. It kinda bothers me that image beats out substance because I know a ton of people who have more talent that make absolutely nothing on it beause they lack the right branding to make their pics cool enough to "sell."

I hate hipsters. Scenster shit is a way for no-talent hacks to use image to sell people music and other crap that isn't worth a dime on its own. It's homebrew ashlee simpson and Backstreet boys. Buying it because "no-one else is buying it" is just as bad as buying something because everyone does.

All this being said, he doesn't seem like a bad guy, He'll likely get flushed out of the scene at some point because you really can't have much of a shelf life in that type of atmosphere.

THus spoke a hipster icon. Seriously, you write for the Onion. Who do you think your audience is? Chances are they listen to Neutral Milk Hotel and insist they knew about Modest Mouse before they were big.

If you know what "hipster" means and dislike it, chances are you are a hipster.

Of course these photos aren't incredible pieces of art. The whole point is the kid is prolific. Yes, many of you are better photographers than he is, but you don't post gazillions of photos every week. I'm on some archived folder on Cobra Snake from his brief trip to Sundance Film Fest. Does that make me a disingenuous tired hipster?

I'm not so sure about that.

What irks me about hipsters is how they have no identity other than this "get to it before anyone else does" bs. I mean, you should like what you like, not like it because it's popular in your "scene"

Liking music on your own terms, because it sounds good to you, is vastly different from liking music because it is new and not *yet, popular, then ditching it as soon as it becomes tired in your eyes. Music shouldn't be a status symbol.

The Onion isn't really hipster, imo, if only because everyone and their kid brother knows what the Onion is. Therefore, regardless of its humor-content, it's off limits to them.

I had been wondering what "the Ron Jeremy of photography" was supposed to mean. Perhaps that he was short, fat, and hairy. Or that he had sex with all of his models. But I think Roethke cleared it up for me indirectly.

wow, bitter much? it's almost as though you have some personal stake in the matter.

did you just want to mention that you too have been photographed by this lousy hipster that whores himself around to as many parties as possible?

Or, more accurately and less spitefully, it means you live in Los Angeles and leave your house every now and then. wink
