So Serenity needs an additional $40M to make a sequel. So you're worried that the DVD sales won't cover it. My question to you: Do you really want a sequel to happen? You know what Hollywood's track record is where sequels are concerned. Maybe they ought to leave well enough alone.
And yes, the cover sucks. River looks positively horrifying.
That cover is indeed shite. But, as has already been said, it's a movie that will sell more on word of mouth than random people buying it because it has a cool cover. I don't think the shitty cover will affect sales too much.
Entertainment Weekly did an article on Serenity in which they said Universal said it needed to make $80 million globally to be considered for a sequel.
Obviously, not every movie in the world has to make $80 million or more to be considered for a sequel, dunno where the hell you got that ridiculous idea from.

Thanks.

Um. I don't know where the hell you got the ridiculous idea that I was applying that figure to every movie in the world.

and how often do you shell out $20 or more on a DVD based solely on the packaging, without knowing anything about it to begin with?
I bought Total Recall and Basic Instinct the same day because of their neat fucking packaging.
Packaging has proven to do a LOT with DVD sales.
If you don't believe, walk up to my DVD shelf and notice first thing you'll do is grab the Booksleved Lawrence of Arabia and the tincanned Evil Dead 2. DVD buyers do the same thing. At least give it good art. Make it something that makes anyone go "oh hey! that looks neat!"
I think fans are upset because A) they miss the series, and this film might be the last incarnation of that universe B) they lobbied hard for this movie and showed a lot of support C) they're definitely going to buy the DVD, and they'd like to have something nice and classy as a collector's item to reward their fandom, not a piece of D-list looking trash.
It could just have a big picture of Jayne taking a crap, I don't care... I'm still buying it when it comes out. Going right next to the Firefly boxed set on my shelf.
Think Jayne is one of my favourite characters of all time He gets some of the best lines...as well as some of the more awkward moments, but damn if that doesn't make it all the funnier...
