Hey guys I'm new to Sg but not to the alternative scene. I have always been counted as weird and alternative in my area but having been going out for a while and a lover of the web sites, art and models I know I am fairly plain. As is obvious when I go to clubs. I dress for my life i.e. smart for work, casual for boyfriends family etc. Am I wrong? Should I be more alternative or are the girls of SG our movie icons? Is it okay that I am not as alternative all the time? Or am I a part timer? I never deny who I am and everyone from my childhood remembers me as their version of freak but have I soold out? Answers on a postcard lol

Perhaps you should be whatever the fuck you want.
It sure seems like you think about it too much.

Edit: that came out a lot more angry sounding than I meant it to.

i think 'wish i were exotic?' is more what you were looking for.

and i think that you should be asking for advice, rather than posting in the current events board.

what you need to realize is that you control what you do. you feel the way you want to feel, and if you're unhappy, change what your doing. get involved in your own life.

Being "alternative" is more of a state of mind. I have a sleeve of tattoos and gauged up ears but if someone in that scene looked down on me because I was wearing a nice shirt or pants, they can fuck off. I am who I am. I don't care what people think, I wear what I want to wear and look how I want to look.

Don't let anyone tell you what template you should hold up for how to look.

Eh, I look pretty un-alternative, but generally people know the difference when they talk to me.

The cool thing about SG is that most of the people here won't look down on your for WHAT you are, but WHO you are... if you're intelligent, amusing and not a dick, you're fine I think biggrin

I understand the impulse to be like, "if i were more like this or less like that would I be happier?" But why would you ask a bunch of nimrods on a internet message board what the hell you should dress like? I mean, what the hell do we know. Honey child, I can't even find clean socks in the morning and you want me to tell you what to wear? Oh Helllll no.

I can't believe people have actually answered me I'm a bit new to the net. To be honoust it was more of a debate. I am happy with what I wear mostly because I'm too rushed every day to think about it. However doesn't everyone have a moment on a night out when they think did I over/under dress, should I have been wilder/more conservative was that the way to go? I repect people who have a distinctive style but if you don't or you like a few styles....Am I just trying to fit in to alternatives and the "norm" or ar am I just happy in any company opr style? It's not something that keeps me up at night just a thought...

And on that day, I will die happy.

Wear what you dig... if it makes you comfortable, go for it. my daily uniform is usually some surplus olive green cargo pants, chuck taylors, and a workshirt... i don't care how it looks, it's practical (lots of pockets rules) and very comfortable (the US Army knows how to make some comfortable pants) so i repeat... Wear what you dig.

I thought alternative was wearing what you want no matter what. So if you feel like Express one day and Hot Topic another...go for it babe. Hell, if you wanna wear your sweats out cause you just didn't feel like taking the time for black eyeliner....then go for it.

Why should we bother giving advice to a total square like yourself?

It was discussion boy However if the most you have to add is insult then maybe your comments wouldn't be helpful. I'm so glad I am confident and don't feel put down by those who feel their better simply because they never have doubt.

"Exotic" as you put it (Punk, Alternative, whatev) to me is a mindset. Ok well I guess Exotic is more like a style, whereas 'Punk' has come to represent both a style and a mindset.

But either way.

Its all about whats going on in your mind. It could have started with feeling different than your friends about politics, music, art, or whatever. It could have had something to do with where and/or how you grew up. But for many of us, we became drawn to this lifestyle because we either had something affect us, or began to identify with these people as people we felt comfortable with.

For some of use, these ideas, friendships, feelings begin to alter the way we present ourselves to the world. Some of us get piercings, or tattoos, or dye our hair.

These are outward changes that (in many cases) reflect something going on inside.

The only time its not cool is when you're doing it to impress others, denying or ignoring the way you feel about it.

I bet alot of people here have to cover up some ink, or maybe take out a piercing, wear a suit or whatever when they go to work. I used to before I went back to school. Its because some of us take jobs that we really enjoy, jobs that (unfortunately) haven't entirely accepted the way we look. But thats our choice for the work we do.

so don't feel guilty about the way you dress in different situations, or how alternative or exotic you are...just make sure its the way you want to be.

buuuuut, thats just the way I feel.

I get it. I'm the same way. My mindset is weird and artsy but my typical uniform is a random hoodie and yoga pants. Why? Because that's what comfortable. I had a killer alterna-outfit planned for the SG show complete with these crazy bondage boots, fisnets made into a top, a short skirt, and lots o' metal and leather. I ended up going in jeans and a hoodie, because all that shit isn't comfortable to me so I knew I'd be miserable always yanking on my skirt or feeling like that heavy-ass dog collar was choking me. Nixon can wear that stuff and look great and at least appears to be comfortable. As much as I wish I could do that, I can't.

My hair is close to my natural color because to have buttery blonde locks with shocks of pink running through it is way too much upkeep for me, Although I wish I had that.

It's just about what you're comfortable with and doing. Do you have time (and the cash) to keep up with crazy hair colors and cuts, getting nails done, lots o' leather and stuff? Besides, it's fun to throw people off who think you're "normal" at first glance.

ALTHOUGH, and here's my problem...it does make it harder to get into those circles of people where like minded but better-dressed people don't really pay any attention because you look like an everyday schmo.
