George Takei, perhaps best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series and subsequent movies, has recently come out in the new issue of Frontiers, a Los Angeles Magazine for the lesbian and gay community.

"It's not really coming out, which suggests opening a door and stepping through. It's more like a long, long walk through what began as a narrow corridor that starts to widen."

In the issue he discusses his childhood in a U.S. internment camp, his 18-year relationship with his partner Brad Altman, his siblings' inability to accept his homosexuality, and his new onstage role as a psychologist in 'Equus'.

His decision to publicly discuss his sexuality was part inspiration from his role in the new Martin Dysart play, and part motivation from the current social/political climate.

"The world has changed from when I was a young teen feeling ashamed for being gay," he said. "The issue of gay marriage is now a political issue. That would have been unthinkable when I was young."

He's 69. I feel very sad for him that he has not felt able to "come out" sooner.

I really hope everyon'e he's worked with supports him, and that there is no stupid fall out.

That being said, I'm with mat8drb, that because of things it only happenned now.

I hope this brings him much peace in his life, and not torment.

It kind of was common knowledge, but he'd never stated it in the press or anything. This was his first "media" reference to his homosexuality.

Best. Reference. EVAR.

I know George and Brad very well, and I am so happy for them both. It's not a huge secret to anyone who knows them, and I've always hoped that the day would come when George could come out.

You can dance like Sulu
and shake your little behind
You gotta give it a chance when you do the Sulu Dance,
and your friends will say
"Oh my."

yes.

I hope our society will soon progress to a point where we realize that a person's sexual preference has nothing to do with their abilities and character.

but good for him. I wish him no backlash.

All I can say is WOW! I do not know if this was something that was supposed to be obvious but I really had no idea. I love Star Trek and I concider myself a pretty big geek in that area. But WOW. I mean, it is not like he is flaming or anything.

I say, good for him. I am glad he finally got the courage to take that step into this frontier.
