Is it expressly forbidden in writing, as in a dress code? Or did the boss just say no when you asked?
I tend to just do what I want, and I haven't had any negative consequences outside of disapproving looks. But if that really isn't feasible, retainers do work well. Mine was flesh toned (I wore it for a wedding), and it wasn't all that noticeable.

A stud in the middle of your lip? As in, a vertical labret? A labret? A center lip ring?

I guess it doesn't really matter which piercing you're referring to... there's really no good, easy way to hide facial piercings like that. A retainer is not going to work with a strict workplace, because you can still see it... it's just less noticeable.

You need to either find a new job or become SO GOOD at your current one that your boss wouldn't fire you over a labret.

i just plain won't take jobs where i can't look exactly as i want. and you know what? it hasn't been too limiting at all, because when i go job-hunting i end up applying only at places i'd LOVE to work anyway. (not that i've had to go job-hunting often or anything, just once in the past couple years because i moved).

but i can see how it might be an issue if you already hold a job somewhere that won't allow modifications.

i just wouldn't want to work somewhere that wants to dictate how i look. i understand the reasonable limits at my current job (basically no obscene tshirts is the only taboo thing, well, and no obscene tattoos showing but my boss has like an explodey heart or something on his neck, i can't quite figure out what it is but he's told me it's borderline as far as that rule goes), but beyond that they know that our ability to do our job is in no way related to our appearance.

the reason why my boss told be that "its not a good idea" (nice way of saying fuck you no!!!) is because im a messeger i NYC... a walking messenger (not that it matters anyway lol) and i deliver to big "important" clients... yea thats his reason blackeyed he doesnt want his clients to see that "goth" "emo" "rocker dudes" are working for the company frown

i dont know why, we rule biggrin

i applied for my job wearing my jewelry. they hired me so everything is fair game. ARRR!!!
i find that "smaller" businesses are less likely to care about how you're dressed or what the color of your hair is.

I got a job bussing tables with 1" lobes and tattoos on my arms. It was just a "first job i can find here" type of thing. But I had to bust my ass and prove myself and they let me wait tables. But yeah..what Gwendolyn said..it's pretty hard to hide facial piercings.

I dont know where to go next..... 9 facial piercings pose as a threat to employers round these parts =S
