An Australian policeman, noticing a car had been parked far past the time limit at a shopping center, left a ticket on the windshield. Fairly standard procedure... Except for the fact that the driver of the car, a 71-year-old man, was dead in the driver's seat, where he'd apparently been for quite some time.

The man had been reported missing nine days previously and was known to be "seriously ill", The Age reports.

The Mayor of the eastern suburb of Maroondah, Paul Denham, explained that the "parking officer had not noticed the man when he attached the parking fine to the windscreen", offering: "The parking bays are 90-degree with cars parked nose in. A small garden bed is located immediately at the front of the parking bays. Our local laws officer checked and wrote out the ticket at the rear of the vehicle and placed the ticket from the passenger side on the windscreen. The local laws officer did not notice anything unusual regarding the vehicle, and is extremely distressed to have learned of the situation."

Knowing government, I'm sure they'll expect the man's family to pay the parking fine.

What makes me sad about this stuff is now they are going to "launch an investigation" and drag the parking guy through "intense interegation" to find out what "extreme factors" may have caused such an error. Then they are going to review the procedures for giving parking tickets. Then someone will want to have an investigation into why nobody has every taken this situation into consideration before.. It will drag on for years, cost tons of money, and in reality some cop was prolly thinking about screwing his wife (or mistress) while he was on the job.

Why would you get sad about a completely hypthetical situation that will probably never happen?

Well, if the windows were tinted its very likely he didn't look closely, and he wouldn't have any reason to anyways. His job is soley concerned with the license plate, which is on the OUTSIDE. I mean, do YOU you normally go out of your way peer into stranger's parked cars? Why would you? What would you normally see-garbage? Toys? Papers? Its not exactly the most exciting job in the world. Give the poor guy a break. whatever

Aww, cut the guy some slack. Shit happens, we can't always be 100% alert.

people cant alway be alert, but if your sticking a parking fine sticker on the windscreen of the car (as is standard with traffic wardens almost world wide) he should have noticed someone sat in the car, whether dead or alive. he was just being ignorant, lazy or, as they are in the uk, he was on commision eeek
