Do you ever get up in the morning and reach for a cigarette to help you wake up? New research says that even though that nicotine fix will immediately help you feel more alert and focused, a lifetime of smoking may actually reduce your IQ.

To investigate that association, Glass and her colleagues examined brain function among 172 men from the same community, including 103 men who abused alcohol.

The team found that men with higher scores on the lifetime alcohol problems scale (LAPS) and those who reported a higher number of pack-years of smoking (i.e. packs of cigarettes smoked per day times number of years) both had lower IQ scores and lower scores on a test of global proficiency.

Participants in the study were judged on speed and accuracy of tests including short-term memory, verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning. Test results for seasoned smokers were even lower than those of alcoholics.

Maybe this just means that smoking is more likely to be taken up by stupid people.

Well, you've got to be an idiot to start smoking to begin with. Exactly what do you get out of it, besides a money hole and a lot of potential health problems?

The study doesn't present a causal relationship between smoking and intelligence. I would have liked to have said the OP was mistaken to try to draw such a conclusion, but it appears that in the original article the researchers attempted to do the same thing. ARRR!!!

Well, I'm not going to argue that I wasn't an idiot when I was fifteen.

This seems fairly obvious to me, if you load your body with toxins it is never going to operate at 100% efficiency. The question this doesn't answer is if you stop long term will your body correct the imbalances and your IQ would go back to normal.

The study does jump to plenty of conclusions though.
