Theres no denying it, Jim Woodring is just plain weird. But thank god he is because hes produced some of the most bizarre and indelible images ever. He introduced himself to the world with his autobiographical work Jim and then his freaky little woodland type creature Frank. Now hes collected a number of his images in the book Seeing Things.
I'm so happy to see this. The animated Frank DVD that he made in Japan comes out this Christmas!

his art, to me, has always seemed geared for appreciation on a subconscious level. its like all these archtypes floating out in space materialize for just a moment on his pages. you can catch a glimpse of a strange and ancient reality. it is so foreign to our conscious mind, that it seems religious...but it is really just the underlying human condition we have hidden from plain view. it is the stuff of the subconscious released...dreams.
Every person that I have showed "The Frank Book" to has been mesmerized by it. They'll start reading a little bit, then just get sucked in, occassionally offering statements like "Wow! This is trippy!"
Woodring is a big inspiration to me. I love his work and his art. It's transcendental.
