My "kitchen" is a single shelf, a microwave, and a toaster oven. For space, I put the toaster oven on top of the microwave. When I used the microwave for the first time in this setup, I heard crackly noises. I don't know if it was from the toaster oven (which was off) or the toast that I left inside. Will the microwave fry the toaster oven because it's so close and start a fire or can I leave it like that? Any electricians in the house?

I know the thread title sounds a lot more interesting than the question. Sorry. wink

Odds are it was the microwave, but move the toaster oven and then microwave something and see if you still hear the crackly noises.

Just how small is your kitchen ? As unlikely as this toaster bomb sounds... If I was high on crack and had gone through a similar thought process I would have simply removed the toaster from the microwave and got on with my day. Rather than risking certain death until I got a sensible answer to an electrical query on a porn site to confirm my safety.

The only way it is that combination is if your microwave is faulty as there should be no "leaking" of microwaves outside of the mw oven itself.
Otherwise it's just something else.

If you were using both at once it is possible you fried the plug, a normal outlet can only handle about 1600 watts continuously maybe 1800 if you are lucky. The insulation around the wiring behind the plug or the plug itself may be charred.

If you were operating one at a time, then it probably wasn't anything of note.

Only if you had foil inside microwave would you hear the crackling.
That's a no no.
But other than that, not sure.

Some microwaves make strange noises while they are doing whatever they do to your food, and afterward, sort of like a Buick ticking in the driveway. Maybe you had the microwave in a place where you couldn't hear this crackling before ... ? Does the toaster oven get very hot on the outside (hot enough, I mean, that it could have damaged the microwave)? Other than this, I wouldn't worry about them interacting with each other in a dangerous way.

Al and I have next to no counter space, so our toaster oven sits atop our microwave. I have never had any trouble using either independantly or both at the same time. I can't speak for Al, though.

I was microwaving a cup of soup with a metal rim, but it specifically said it was microwave safe. But I moved the toaster off it as soon as I heard the noises, and it sounded like they kept going in the oven after I moved it. But I had toast in there that might have been cooling down or something... too many factors involved. tongue

The microwave was included with the room, so it's pretty shady. The first microwave I had in this place shot sparks out of the outlet and started smoking when I tried using it. The new one has been fine, but I probably shouldn't take any chances with it. I think I'll just put the oven on the floor while I'm using the microwave to be safe. I don't have renter's insurance. blush

i think you need insurance and when you start one or the other...leave the room...i dont think it is a good idea to stack appliances like that...the heat needs to escape and your blocking it

if it was because of your toaster, you would see sparks flying from the toaster. Having your toaster on top of the microwave will not be a problem. Just no metal objects inside although it is a neat show.

I think 'Will This Explode' is a great concept statement for a game show.

'All right, Mary. The clock is ticking! It's up to you to decide, for 10,000 dollars, whether you're holding the first ever bar of soap with an integrated digital watch and cigarette lighter or a brick of C4 with an armed detonator that will activate in thirty seconds! What will you do!?'
