The Penn State Nittany Lions are off to one hell of a year. I mean, really, when's the last time this football team was playing well? ....It's been awhile. The ladies basketball team, on the other hand, have been playing pretty well for quite awhile, in part thanks to head coach Rene Portland, who's 25-season record stands at 578-204. However, a recent cloud has fallen over PSU sports. Portland's "no alcohol, no drugs, no lesbians" policy was brought into light yesterday. The National Center for Lesbian Rights contacted Penn State yesterday to demand that they put a stop to Portland's discriminatory ways. A 1986 interview quotes her saying,

“I will not have it [lesbianism] in my program.”

Unfortunately her mindset has not changed since.

What sparked all of this? Jennifer Harris, a guard who started 22 games and averaged 10 points a game during her sophomore year, was forced to transfer earlier this year.

Despite Harris' outstanding performance as a player during her two-year career at Penn State from 2003 to 2005, Coach Portland repeatedly questioned Harris about her sexual orientation, repeatedly threatened to kick Harris off the team if she found out Harris was a lesbian, and eventually told other players not to associate with Harris because she believed that Harris was gay. In 2005, Coach Portland abruptly told Harris to find somewhere else to play.

As a PSU grad and a member of the LGBTQ community, I think it's about time. Joe Paterno, while he says he wouldn't care if someone was, boasts that nobody on his one-hundred plus person football team is queer. The PSU community has known about Portland's policies and treatment of players for years. I'm just thankful someone was brave enough to finally come forward about it.

Wow, you'd think such a competitive woman wouldn't be so opposed to having competition tongue

why is it that whenever someone is homophobic the first responce is to call them gay?

I fully support coach Portlands decision to keep homosexuals off her basketball team.

I mean really, everyone knows that one gay person gays everyone else up and that would just ruin everything, now wouldn't it?

Ms. Harris should have known better than to be a supposed lesbian and try to do anything worthwhile in our society today, it's pure selfishness if you ask me. Besides, everyone knows gays can't play proffesional sports, they're always too busy trying to "gay up" the fans and corrupt the minds of our youth.

No but I can tell you from second hand) experience (one of my best friends coaches women's college soccer) that some teams with multiple lesbians deal a lot with lovers quarrels and triangles....... It's a distraction but many successful coaches have dealt with it..

me, too. but this woman is like the joe paterno of basketball, just not quite as well known. i think that's why nobody's had the balls to bring it up before. the queer community around here is kindof up in arms because we're expecting some major backlash.

we shall see what happens, i suppose.

IS it a no fucking party campus too?

Because really, with no alcohol, drugs and/or lesbians it isn't a party.

Doesn't Ms. Portland know that lesbians, being more masculine than straight women, naturally make the best athletes?whateverwink
At least someone's trying to do something about this ridiculosity. Unless hetero sex is part of the sport (if so, I wanna play), I can't see someones sexuality being a factor.

Well if they are at all serious about their anti-discrimination policy they pretty much have to. And hopefully people will hold their feet to the fire on it.

Hmm...apparently my alma mater is going to be playing its homecoming game next Saturday versus Penn State. I'll most likely be working--what a shame, since I care so much about football. But anyway: these coaches are assholes. I can see how maybe "love triangles" might develop if there are multiple lesbians on a team, but that is assuming that the multiple lesbians on the team will be attracted to each other. What if they have relationships with girls who aren't on the team? I guess it's the old assumption that you should be afraid of lesbians if you're a woman, because of course they must be hoping to fuck you. whatever

What is with Sport and homosexuality? I used to work for a British Tabloid paper, and there are gays in Football (The English for Soccer, BTW) but no one dare breathe a word about it because most of the fans would lynch them, even though they currently worship them. All this from people who adulate men who hug, kiss and share baths! Go figure!
