Anyone seriously considering going vegetarian or vegan should read Vegan Outreach's Guide to Cruelty Free Eating http://veganoutreach.org/guide/gce.pdf - it is the most comprehensive, no nonsense, guide to vegan food, transitioning to veganism, nutritional concerns, and alternatives for your favorite cheesy foods out there. many people try veganism and don't stick with it because they don't read up on it first and they fuck up and don't do it right. If you really care about stopping the cruelty on factory farms and making such a huge change in your life - you owe it to yourself to spend a half an hour reading this - and add it to your favorites for reference. You can order copies from vegan outreach - www.veganoutreach.org

someone asked me for a sample of what vegans eat. as you can see, much of this is pretty much everything an American eats, only with replacements for the actual meat and dairy. i'm not speaking for all vegans, just myself, but here it goes:

breakfast
-vegan waffles (availabe at any supermarket) (labelled as 'eggless' and 'wheat-free' one brand is "Vans"
w/ maple syrup, earth balance (or soy garden) (again, any supermarket carries this "vegan butter"), strawberries, orange juice or chocolate soymilk or almond milk or whatever
-or a bagel w/ earth balance and/or fruit jelly
-hot oatmeal w/ crushed up walnuts and some almonds in it mmmm
-cold cereal (i stay away from major brands that load products with sugar) w/ soy, rice, almond, or oat milk. 90 percent of commerical cereals are vegan, however most are loaded with sugar, which is vegan for the most part, but refined sugar is basically a drug and is bad for you. any cereal in the natural food isle such as back to nature or nature's path or trader joe's brands is good...
-vegan french toast (that i cook myself - for receipe get a vegan starter pack from afa-online.org)
-vegan pancakes (that i cook myself)
-soymilk, bananna, Green Edge powder (incl. cloraphyl, digestive enzymes, nutrients, phytonutrients, green foods, and other good health stuff)

lunch
-vegan burrito (amy's brand, trader joe's, etc)
-vegan soup (amy's minestrome or amy's no chicken noodle soup are my favorites, or veggi chilli or another flavor at my college)
-thai soup packets (reminds me of "ramen noodles" only its a lot healthier)
-sandwich w/ deli slices (ham, turkey, salami, whatever) w/ kettle salt and pepper chips (best chips ever)
-grilled vegan cheese (tofutti or vegan singles) w/ smart bacon or another vegan bacon
-peanut butter (or almond butter, cashew butter, etc)and fruit jelly on whole wheat bread
-pizza w/ soy cheese
-Mexican place (green cactus, salsa salsa, etc) umm...black bean soup, veggi taco salad (no cheese), veggi burrito, etc
-Deli: Lettice, Tomato, Cucumber, Onion, Carrot Sandwich on toasted whole wheat...fruit salad and/or soy crisps on side
-Lunberg brands (just add water) rice sensations (flavors: a) thai coconut giner, b) tomato, garlic and onion, c) giner miso, etc)
-Simply Asia "sesame teriyaki noodle bowl" (or another flavor) ready to eat in 2 minutes
-Fantastic Always Natural Big Soup Noodle Bowl (spicy thai or another flavor)
-Health Valley low-fat vegetarian black bean soup (just add hot water)
-Pete's tofu2go ready-to-eat tofu snacks Sesame Giner or Mango Sesame (you dip it in flavored giner soy sauce
-Almost Anything in the deli of Wild By Nature (BBQ tofu, an interesting rice, scrambled tofu (eggs), rice or veggi burger, vegan dumplings, salad, collard greens (w. olive oil and garlic), etc
-Tiger Lily is a vegetarian deli in Port Jefferson on East Main Street - they have lots of new stuff everyday it never gets boring eating there and they know how to cook food too. Fresh squeezed make your own fruit/veggi juices or frozen soy chai latte's are amazing...indian spice is the best...
-Chinese food (tofu and brocolli, veggi lo mein, buddhist delight, veggi soup, etc)
-Sushi (avocado rolls mmm taste so good, and fight prostate cancer)

diner
-spagetti w/ sauce - in the sauce i like to put tofurky sausages,, with garlic bread a juice (cranberry or peach apricot or whatever there are tons i looove fruit juices)
-heat up something quick like a trader joe's corn and bean enchilada or one of the dozens of different brands that make vegan veggi burgers on a bun, maybe with smart bacon and some veggies
-left overs from eating out (Empire Schzeuan in St. James, Zen Palate in Westbury (http://www.zenpalate.com), Tiger Lily in Port Jefferson http://www.tigerlilycafe.com/)
-vegan tacos (use meat alternative for the beef - in frozen food or natural foods section of any major supermarket) sometimes w/ vegetarian refried beans
-salad w/ vegan dressing (natural foods section) w/ tofu, sunflower seeds, pinenuts, pumpkin seeds, kidney beans, carrots
-pitas and this bean dip stuff or hummus
-fried kale and spinach, w/ tempeh and asian sauce
-steamed vegetables over rice
-stuffed peppers (cook rice meat alternative crumbles in pepper, add tomato sauce)
-Mediterranean food @ the Wild Fig (Smithhaven mall or Glen Cove www.wildfigonline.com) They sell veggi kabobs, Falafels, Hummus, Eggplant, Lentil Soup, and lots of other stuff I can't pronounce but its good....

snacks

-pumpkin butter spread on whole wheat or splet or oat bread or rye
-luna or clif or odwalla bars (all vegan and organic). any other vegan organic raw food bar also.
-soy or rice ice cream "soy delicious" is my favorite brand , but tofutti is availabe in major supermarkets
-buy or bake some vegan cookies w/ a recipe found online, or buy them from wild by nature, 7-11, or a health food store, served with silk nog (vegan eggnog) or soy shake (chocolate ...sold at stop n shop) or chocolate hazelnut milk mmmm. family dollar sells lots of vegan (but ghetto) cookies.
-fruit (apple, bannana) or veggies w/ any nut butter (peanut butter or almond butter or cashew butter, etc)
-radishes or carrots or celery dipped into hummus (mushed chickpeas and tahini w/ spices) (find in any supermarket, but those brands (cedars, three tribe) suck in my opinion i like the hummus from trader joes or small health food stores
-chips and salsa or hummus!
-trader joe's sell these chips that taste just like doritos. they are good without any dip and have no whey or cheese or MSG in em. (MSG causes MS (multiple sclerosis) and alzehimers, according to many studies.
-roasted corn on a BBQ, dip in Earth Balance or Soy Garden (vegan healthy butters) if you choose... or shis kabob's (mushrooms, peppers, tomatos, potatoes, tofu on a stick - bbq it)
-there are many vegan bakeries in New York City
-frozen chai soy latte from Tiger Lily (or a similar drink from Starbucks) w/ cookie or cake
-Witches Brew in West Hempsted has tons of vegan deserts (cake, cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, etc), herbal teas, coffee's...

If you think that vegan food sounds disgusting, wait until you find out what's in ground beef. biggrin

As much as I hate industrial agriculture, I could never be a vegan: soy makes me sick to my stomach. I might consider being a vegetarian, the only problem is that meat is just so delicious.

i don't think there's anything wrong with this guy letting people know about this. lots of people don't know where to start when going vegan. it's intimidating. lists like this are helpful.

people who aren't vegan don't need to take it personally. it's not an attack against you. just some info for those interested.

As for the letting people know about this it's probably fine, but there's definitely something wrong with this guy. His other posts run the gamut from typical far-left stuff to the ridiculously absurd to the downright offensive. The fact that this one actually doesn't make you dumber for having read it is pretty much a case of a stopped clock being right twice per day. I'm coming to think of him as a pussy11 for the CE set, except he's actually serious.

They say some veggie's feel pain while being boiled or being cut. I've got your "cruelty free" swinging. Get over it. Life hurts.

I know you vegan kids are all about the whole 'reducing the suffering of animalkind' but how exactly is maple syrup cruelty free? You're farming a living thing for it's blood.

Actually, I guess that's my problem with the whole animal cruelty thing. I've never been able to accept that having a nervous system grants a living creature special rights and considerations, and I can't live without killing some things to do so. I don't feel like apologizing everytime I use a piece of paper or wash my hands, and I can't really justify distinguishing between betsy the cow or an oak tree.
