I'm getting glasses any day now because my eyes are shit. It gives me headaches to try to read the board at school. I wanna know what's your fave style of frame? I like catseye myself. Also, can you go on ebay and look at vintage frames and pick out one you like and take it to the eye doctor and have lenses made to fit it? I've seen alot on ebay I like. Never having bought glasses before I don't know if you have to buy them there or if you can do this.... anyone know?

sure you can - you just have to check with the local place in your area and make sure they do that sorta thing (but most do)

I love cats eye, but I went with something a bit more squared off, so I could wear them professionally (but they're still super cute for going out)

*edited to add - I'd go to a lenses place first and try a bunch of styles on to make sure certain styles work on your face - you'd be suprised at how what you think you want isn't what looks great (although, I have to admit - those were the very first pair I tried on - even after dozens of others, I went with this one)

the best thing i can tell you is to take someone you trust with you if you plan on trying them on and buying them or even just trying them on to get ideas of what looks good on you... never make the decision all on your own, it can really get too hard with so many options. good luck! wink

It probably depends on the place that you go on whether or not they will let you use old frames for new lenses...eyeglass shops make a huge part of their revenue on the frames, so some may try to tell you that it's "policy" to only use the frames from their shop. Usually, if you're insistent, or call the 1-800 corporate number, you can get other answers. My husband recently reused a set of frames he's been in love with for years.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the "geek chic" type frames--large, boxy, and/or wire-rimmed...I need to get a new pair myself, as I lost my old ones and am damned tired of wearing these contacts.

Be sure to post a pic in the "Girls With Glasses" section when you get them! smile

I look like a dipshit but these are the frames I just got. It was super easy. I figured it would be more doctorly, but it was like buying a sack of peanuts or something. I like bigger frames, but almost any kind of frame looks good on a girl. Girls look marvelous in glasses, smoking cigerettes.

Personally I prefer the more reserved, undistracting type of glasses that you typically see fashion moderate celebs like elton john wear.

Edited because apparently, I have no idea how to spell.

you actually want to pick your frames depending on the shape of your face. rounder face with square frames and round frames with a more square face. Or so I've heard.

Mildly alarmed, yes. Dipshit, no.

I love your frames...my next pair will be a bit like those, I think.

Interestingly, black people in particular really like my frames. All of my friends like them, but I've had at least ten strangers off the street compliment me on them and they were all black.

As far as getting vintage frames... here's a suggestion. If you find something you like online, find a local retailer with a similar style/size/color/etc. and try them on so you have a better idea if you'll like them on you.

But frankly, I would never buy glasses without first having done extensive tryouts. I tried on probably thirty or forty frames at my optometrist before I found my current pair.

Make sure you're comfortable with the size/shape of the lenses. I bought a pair of expensive frames that were just the earpieces and the bridge attached to very narrow lenses, and I wound up hating them because I could see around the lens so much. The lenses were just way too small.

My current pair, the ones above, are great except that they cut off most of my periphreral vision. Which is only bad when I'm driving, and I don't need my glasses to drive anyways. And I have a second pair that don't do that. But bear that in mind.

Also, get the scratch-resistant coating. So worth it. And if you're getting bifocals, get the seamless ones. So worth it. And I didn't like the Transitions lenses. So not worth it.

And that's all I have to say on the subject.

I Loooooove My Glasses. I have gotten so many wonderful comments from other people who like my glasses too. If you think that you might like black plastic frames you should go to an optometrist and try them out and see if you like them. If you don't think they look right on you then no worries. Everytime I would go see the eye doctor to pick out my frames I would take FOREVER! So don't worry about how long it takes you to decide on a pair. You are going to have to wear them a lot so you might as well Love em and be comfy in them biggrin Good luck to ya and I hope you find the right pair for you smile

I know exactly what your talking about. You are slightly near sighted. Stigmatism most likely.
I like nice cheap glasses from walmart. Take your prescription to walmart, they have the same brand lenses, and cheaper frames. I have had this pair for 3 years. I were them every day. They are geek rectangle with no rim on the bottom. I like them to be as light as possible. I also like to scooch them down my nose and look over the top. It makes you look smart.tongue

You can get places to do old frames for you, just bee persistant with them. Tell them they were family heirlooms willed to you by your aunt who died saving children in bali, and so on. Eventually they will cave in. It's hard to say "I come here for all my glasses" because they keep your perscription on record. Even better, tell the people at the glasses place that you will buy another pair,(lenses and frames) if they do the old ones too, then you have a back up pair. If you only own 1 pair of glasses, you will be bound to break them by the laws of karma.

If you really like the vintage frames, by all means, try eBay and similar sources. You have to be careful about some of them because many vintage frames were extremely heavy and the plastic has often started to delaminate (for multi-layered acetate frames) or become very brittle. If they're in good shape, you shouldn't have to pay too much. Most of the retro-styled new frames are much thinner and less bulky, but still retain characteristic shapes and adornments. They can be expensive, but if you're going to be wearing these all day every day, pony up the money.

There are also plenty of new frames on eBay, usually from European manufacturers that don't have distribution in the US. However, if the description reads like a used car salesmans' spiel, I'd be wary- there are tons of people on eBay who want to sell you cheap, fragile frames at designer prices.

If you have a pair of frames of your own, but your glasses shop tells you they only put lenses in their own frames, turn around and walk out the door. They're not worth the hassle, and usually don't give you any help.

Ask for the anti-glare coating. It both helps you see in bright light and lets people see your eyes. I can't imagine how people work in front of computers without it. If your prescription is very strong, you might want to spring for high-index lenses, which are made of a plastic that has greater refraction, meaning they can be thinner so you don't look like Urkel. I usually skip the various UV coatings unless I'm getting prescription sunglasses. The benefit of most of the coatings is that they usually have a 1 year warranty, so if you get towards the end of your first year and notice lots of scratches on the lenses, you can get them replaced. The 'anti-scratch' coatings, IMO, don't do much, and are only really useful for kids, who tend to not be very careful with their glasses.

And finally, I swear by Kirk Originals, LA Eyeworks, Harry Lary, and Freudenhaus. All well-made, good-looking, and produced by people, not corporations.

I actually want glasses so I can get some retro styled glasses with thick black frames with the visions lenses that darken in sunlight.

Most places don't have a problem with putting lenses in frames you already have. But almost all of them will charge a fee that almost makes it not worth it. Costco doesn't do that. You need a membership, but it might be worth it.
