If so PLEASE help me out here. I have a 300E and I had to replace my coolant sensor. Easy enough I guess until I tried to get the spring clip retainer ring thing back on!!
It is the only thing preventing me from driving my car, please please can someone tell me do I need a special tool for this thing? If so what do I ask for at the import store? Are there perhaps magic words I need to chant? More cussing and swearing? I've done a lot of that and it isn't helping so far.
Any help would be soooooo appreciated. Seems so dumb a thing to be stuck on but alas I am stuck on this stupid thing.
its always stupid things like that that make working on cars such a fucking pain in the ass. if thats all it needs i think most shops would pop it back in for you for free. call some of the import shops nearby and ask what they would charge, or just stop by.
most of those you prolly wont have to register to do a search. and if you do register just put something about being a girl in your screen name and the guys will be more than eager to help

I can't drive it And the shop can't see it until Monday

have you drained all the coolant or something?
this is really not a good idea but if you NEED the car before monday you 'can' drive it with low coolant as long as the fans are working

you can do that but it cant be that much low. they uusually put these things by the thermostat. it will effect your fuel mixture and timing advance and the shape of your cylinder head (in a very very bad way) to run it with out coolant touching it.
Here is the little bugger I'm having trouble with. I can't get it back on around the sensor.
Obviously the sensor not being held in place in a pressurized system will go flying out without this ring and the sensor creates a big hole in the bottom of the reservoir tank and causes no pressure so there is no way I can drive it without this fucker in place. I had considered a zip tie but it looks like this spring thing compresses the o ring a little too so I'm not sure a zip tie will work.
My god this car is looking GHETTO!!! Between the redneck fix I did on the bypass hose and then thinking about a zip tie makes me ill. I hate redneck fixes but really don't want to wait until Monday, I need my car.

is this your coolant level sensor?
no it is the retainer ring that holds it in place.
its called a snap ring. there are MANY different pliers to opperate these different sizes and angles. you need to get to a store and ask for some or find a way to spread it open over the sensor. dont break it either. but yeah snap ring pliers to open it up.

huh?
coolant level=fuel mixture?
thats what i said.
ps its not a coolant level sensor. its a coolant temp sensor.

i thought it was the coolant temp sensor you were talking about. whats the big deal about driving with a broke coolant level sensor?
sorry i cant be more help, i wouldnt really know what to possibly tell you without even seeing the coolant reservoir and sensor
on alot of german motors the fuel mixture is determined by the tempurture of the water. the sender relays a message to the ecu and that decides lean or rich.

close but everyone these days use coolant temp to help tune a air/fuel mixture and is the biggest determining factor of injector pulse on start up.

and how you supposed to "tune" the mixture? the stand alone computer already does that for you.

i didnt say you could tune the mixture. like you said the computer does it for you. it helps via its signal the ecm to tune its mixture to as close to stoichiometric as posible. the ect is one of many sensors that help tune the injector pulse.
It is a coolant level sensor, here it is this is only a float bob thing, it is on the reservoir tank, it does not have anything to do with the temp, that sensor is someplace else.
THank you all for the help, I'll have to wait for it to cool down and ride my bike up to someplace and try and get this plier. Is it a standard something I can get at Checker? They have a free tool rental thing I'd love to make use of. Or is it a specialty tool like everything else on this car?
