For those of you who are unaware of the genocide the Khmer Rouge caused from 1975 - 1979, or for those who feel they need a reminder, you can now dine at a Khmer Rouge-themed restaurant in Phnom Penh, the capitol of Cambodia. Apparently, "with a menu featuring rice-water and leaves, and waitresses dressed in the black fatigues worn by Pol Pot's ultra-Maoist guerrillas."
Newly opened across the road from Phnom Penh's notorious Tuol Sleng "S-21" Khmer Rouge interrogation and torture center, the cafe is meant to remind Cambodians of the genocide in which an estimated 1.7 million people died.
"Our grandfather and other relatives lost their lives under Pol Pot's regime," said 17-year-old manager Hakpry Agnchealy, whose brother owns the business. "This is more than just a restaurant. It is to remind us of those who died."
"We opened two weeks ago, but have only had two Europeans coming here to eat. We don't know how much longer we can go," she said.
I'm not sure if I should feel sorry for these people, or be furious at such an ill-formed idea.
Recognizing that many tourists might not be able to stomach such a close brush with the Killing Fields, the "Khmer Rouge Experience Cafe" is also promoting itself to those wishing to shed a few pounds.
Wow.
I'm STILL not sure, though. However, one thing I AM sure of- I don't think I'd be able to eat in a place like that.

Hmmm - I guess I'll shelve my Gitmo Bay Grinders Sandwich Shoppe idea.
How about Googuse's House of Butt Pyramids?
Auschwitz Sandchwitzes, anyone?
GODWIN!

Oh dear; it's no surprise to me that people won't eat there, I just can't believe that it's a surprise to the owner!
Some things are hilarious when they're in the worst possible taste, e.g. Naming your Chicken, 'Tikka.' However, (apart from laughing at the cognitively-challenged proprietors) this isn't one of them.
I feel bad for the proprietors, mostly because I'm guessing they can ill afford the loss of their investment in getting this restaurant started.
That said, WTF? Hugely tasteless theme aside, who the hell is going to pay $6 a pop in Cambodia for dove eggs and tea? Let alone forking over cash for "rice water and leaves."
They should have made their idea into oh..I dunno...lets just bat areas around here...a MUSEUM??! How about that? A building where people can go and remember a terrible passing of time. Genius I tell you.
Poor things. I guess we all have ideas that are just insane, but its sad when someone gets to actually launch an idea and end up smacking themselves in the ass...over and over again.
hehe, chicken 'Tikka'...I'm vegetarian and I smiled. hehe.
i was actually at the S-21 genocide museum this past august. unnerving stuff. all of the visitors were very reserved and the place just had a bad feel to it.
i can't imagine anyone coming out of there after seeing the rooms and rooms full of pictures of victims and saying "jee, i wish i could experience what it was like to BE one of those people."

Wow, and I thought the "Titanic Sinking Inflatable Slide" they set up in down town was in poor taste.
I'm glad I'm not the only one really annoyed at those things. They have one every year at one of the local harvest festivals, and I think it's pretty damn ghoulish.
And really, cafe owners, what the fuck were you thinking?

The holocaust museum in DC is the same way. It's a great museum, but when you leave you don't really want to live anymore.

Yeah, the Holocaust museum in DC is the one thing I recommend everyone to go see. Really hits the whole thing home (particularly the room of pictures and the one of the shoes.... God that fucked me up for a while).
The Japanese (I think it was the Japanese) used to have a restaurant that was modeled after Auschwitz. Don't know if it is still open. So this is not really a new idea.
