Hey, you can be a vegetarian eating only things that don't involve killing the entire plant. Fruits, nuts, beans, seed-bearing vegetables like squashes... it can be done.

Granted, I think you'd have to be pretty crazy to try it, but that never seems to stop anybody from doing much of anything around these parts. wink

I dont purposely walk on flowers, and I generally avoid doing so, but I dont feel bad when I do.

Yeah, I can't stand to walk on flowers. There's just something cold about destroying something pretty.

Save for maybe those weeds (dandelions, right?).

Yeah. Fuck them.

As for the Jains. Given your example I think they're acting selfishly by satisfying their beliefs. The problem with belief systems and morals in general, it's quite possible to become blinded by them. I understand what they were trying to do but if I chose to intervene, and as hard as it would be for me, I would act in the best interest of the animal.

how is that different from you, exactly?

Sorry man, can't say I identify. Nature is a cruel cruel thing. When does it all stop? Will you someday try to interject into the lives of other animals? Stop the birds from eating bugs, the snakes from eating birds, wild dogs from eating snakes? I can empathize with wanting to leave as small a footprint on the planet as possible just from a sustainability standpoint, but animals are fucking animals when it comes down to it.

Like the tie-dye effect on your user picture too. It makes me think that you're wearing sandals, shorts with lots of pockets that come down below your knees, and smell of patchouli.

In that case you're eating the children of the plants, and that's even more reprehensible.

Baby killer.

There's an Eastern religious path that takes respect for all living plants and creatures in the literal sense, one of their monks will take a walk in the forest, but very slowly, and will watch where he steps in order not to crush any plants or insects. Their ultimate central claim is that life can be found in all living things, and so all things living should be treated with the same respect one would want to recieve him/herself.

You're not the only one, I don't step on plants, unless it's grass, which contributes absolutely nothing towards the ecosystem. One can call me a hippy, that's his/her ignorant way, but I have nothing to do with the communal or nomadic lifestyles of a 1960's youth cult, and wash regularly. I have a love of horticulture, and garden frequently, stepping on plants seems a bit idiotic to me. Park rangers always inform visitors not to step on plant life when entering nature reserves, it just makes sense. I have a hiker's guide on North-American wildflowers from the 1960's and a good 50-100 of the species in the book don't even exist anymore, or can hardly be found.

Vegetarianism however is not for me, meat is found regularly in my diet and if I couldn't buy it at a store I'd probably be fishing or raising bovines on my own somewhere out on the family farm.

It all boils down to respect for living things, but don't drive yourself crazy about such things, live your life, and try not to kill so many things on your way out. That's all.

i've actually heard of some really crazy fuckers that won't use plastic or gasoline, because they are oil by-products, and oil is basically dead animals from millions of years ago.

But a fruit isn't a tree's baby - it's a tree's ovary. The seed in the middle is the baby. She's a womb killer - there's a huge difference! tongue
